Who is our deputy penalty taker? 09:12 - Aug 9 with 566 viewsmelbs_itfc

I for one am so relieved that McK left Hirst on the pitch so he was available to take the penalty in injury time, which as we know is highly unusual due to him having a preference with swapping forwards after 70 minutes or so. I don’t know about anyone else but I wouldn’t have had as much confidence with the alternative candidates still on the pitch at that time.

Aside from Delap, it seems that our penalty success is pretty mediocre at best in recent times. So it got me wondering who would be considered our back up penalty taker in our current squad?

Safly, Chappers and AAH both have poor to mediocre records, whilst Broady is better but unfortunately he will likely be off soon. Who else has been added to our squad that has a decent record from the spot for other teams? Anyone know?

Clarke was 5/5 when he was on pens for Sunderland year before last so presumably him.

Oh I didn’t know that, that’s good to know. Although I think he was aslo off the pitch when the penalty was given so just as well Hirst hadn’t been subbed then!

I wanted Ashley Young to take it. Would have given back the abuse he received with interest!

If we get another, and Hirst is subbed off and Young is on the pitch, he would be my choice. Been there, seen it, done it.

According to this article he has a 5 - 3 record so not great! He also hasn’t taken a pen for 15 years so it’s a no from me!

Shame Chaplin's stats are so poor, he could be our Eratosthenes. Second in everything but an excellent all rounder, deputy captain, deputy penalty taker, in goal if goalkeeper injured and none on bench...OK, I take your point.

For a bloke that is such a clean striker of the ball, it’s odd that’s he’s so bad at penalties

Also add to that, that left footed penalty takers statistically score more pennos, pound-for-pound than right footed- and yeah, you do wonder if maybe he’s just not very good at penalties.

Despite all the goals Chaplin has, he's actually quite inconsistent in terms of ball striking. I think he needs the ball in quite a specific spot, i.e the Davis cut back (or Burgess as it was against Bournemouth last year) to get a really clean contact.

He definitely has a miscue in him. Look what triggered the fight after our goal, he tried to smash the rebound into the net and missed!
