What a waste of our taxes on 08:22 - Aug 11 by blueasfook | Turning out to support a proscribed organisation ended in arrests? What an absolute shocker. |
Again, not the point as surely you realise.

What a waste of our taxes on 13:21 - Aug 10 by lowhouseblue | well people generally seem ok about staying silent and standing by as horror unfolds in sudan, yeman, nigeria, ukraine, as well as the uyghurs in china. their horror isn't forcing them on to the streets in respect of those humanitarian disasters. |
You dont get to wear a trendy scarf if you're supporting the Uyhgurs.

What a waste of our taxes on 19:56 - Aug 10 by noggin | We've given you answers. What are you doing to protest about the atrocities you have mentioned? You clearly care a lot about them, which is admirable. [Post edited 10 Aug 19:56]

To be fair, what are you doing to protest about what's going on in Gaza? Other than posting on a football message board? Have you been attending civil protests for example?

(might be an idea to change that avatar, given that we're not allowed to swear in the posts themselves!)

What a waste of our taxes on 09:30 - Aug 10 by DJR | A disturbing aspect of the arrests for me is that the founders of Palestine Action have been given permission to challenge the ban. https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/palestine-action-terror-ban-high-court-judge- The case, likely to last three days, will look at whether the terror ban “amounts to a disproportionate interference with the rights to freedom of expression and freedom to protest”, as well as a claim that proscription was imposed without proper consultation with Palestine Action. But, disturbingly, the hearing won't take place until November, and in the meantime hundreds are being arrested who would have their convictions overturned if the appeal proves successful. What this, and the arrests does prove, is that an organisation like Palestine Action shouldn't have been shoe-horned into the Terrorism Act. Instead, if measures were thought necessary, bespoke legislation should have been produced which targeted those involved in the organisation and its actions but not those merely writing messages of support on a piece of cardboard. And this was reported in the Observer. A Police Federation source told The Observer: “Making Palestine Action a proscribed organisation may prove to be impractical in policing terms. It’s just another burden on officers.” [Post edited 10 Aug 9:39]

A rather alarming number of apologists on this thread for what is draconian legislation. But don't take my word for it, just look at what the UN Human Rights organisation says about it, which reflects my comment about the inappropriateness of shoe-horning Palestine Action into the Terrorism Act. https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2025/07/uk-palestine-action-ban-disturbi "UK domestic counter-terrorism legislation defines terrorist acts broadly to include ‘serious damage to property’. But, according to international standards, terrorist acts should be confined to criminal acts intended to cause death or serious injury or to the taking of hostages, for purpose of intimidating a population or to compel a government to take a certain action or not,” said Türk. “It misuses the gravity and impact of terrorism to expand it beyond those clear boundaries, to encompass further conduct that is already criminal under the law.” “The decision appears disproportionate and unnecessary. It limits the rights of many people involved with and supportive of Palestine Action who have not themselves engaged in any underlying criminal activity but rather exercised their rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association,” the High Commissioner said. “As such, it appears to constitute an impermissible restriction on those rights that is at odds with the UK’s obligations under international human rights law.” “The decision also conflates protected expression and other conduct with acts of terrorism and so could readily lead to further chilling effect on the lawful exercise of these rights by many people,” Sadly though, a lot of people in this country don't seem to care about human rights but therein lies a slippery slope where we end up mirroring Russia and Belarus as the only countries in Europe not to be members of the ECHR. And it is good that there are some very brave people prepared to take a stance on this, and sad for me that Labour with a lawyer as leader is going down this route. [Post edited 11 Aug 9:32]
