The video is pretty horrific, in a supposed civilised society.

Whilst I get the English understatement use of the word "pretty"....

Its absolutely despicable.

I'm sure you used to offer some fair and balanced opinions on here, but recently you've just descended into dishonest and disingenuous nonsense to try and distract from valid points.

It's pretty poor stuff tbh.

but clearly not an argument that you can counter. you can label it pejoratively copying the insults used by others but you can't actually engage with the point being made. editorialising rather then debating. i was responding to someone who claimed that 'standing by' and being 'silent' in the face of an humanitarian crisis is unacceptable - and i've shown cases where lots of people who post constantly about gaza stand by and are silent. i'm pointing to inconsistency and hypocrisy. calling me names doesn't respond to that point.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

the war in yemen has killed 300,000 plus and saudi arabia, one of our closest allies, plus the usa etc, have been combatants. why no weekly marches and social media focus? 100,000+ ukranians have been killed by russia - no weekly demonstrations outside the russian embassy? 500+ children have died of starvation in nigeria, a middle income state we have close ties to, where are the demonstrations and the social media outrage. if you claim that 'standing by' is unacceptable, why are people standing by in these cases?

"Sudan is now the world’s largest and most devastating humanitarian crisis, the head of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned" (UN).

Never much of this on the news, or dare I say, copied and pasted from the Guardian in here. Where's the outrage?

We've got a heady blend of whataboutery and false equivalence, to go with your earlier straw manning. Is there ANY debate you'll engage in with intellectual honesty and good faith? It seems not.

when you have no counter argument just resort to insults. herbivore 1-0-1. lack of "intellectual honesty" is just a way of justifying a lack of answers and is very dull.

Why don't you put all of the effort you put into writing posts condemning people who oppose Isr*el's brutal, asymmetric, murderous assault on the people of Palestine into writing posts informing us about what is going on in Yemen?

I would appreciate more information on Yemen, about which I know very little. I promise I won't post on there condemning you for posting about Yemen and saying why aren't you posting about Palestine instead. (Apologies, the last line is facetious, but I would genuinely like to see more information about Yemen if you fancy doing it?)

The video on this link is well worth a watch. It's all rather Orwellian and shameful, especially given the reaction of a couple of people from outside these shores.

And given what's going on, it makes it difficult for the UK to condemn the arrest of protestors in places like Hong Kong.

That is so disturbing. How can those police officers sleep at night? Yes, they're just enforcing the law, but it's a law that goes against British values. You people living in the UK have lost the right to peaceful protest, which should be the most important right of a civilised nation.

i posted in response to someone who said that you can't "Stay silent and just continue to stand by as the horror unfolds". i've just pointed out the logical incoherence, inconsistency and hypocrisy of that. those who post constantly about gaza choose to stay silent and stand by when it comes to other equal or greater horrors. why one humanitarian horror dominates online outrage and others get forgotten is surely an interesting question? but because people don't have an answer they just post abuse. same old, same old.

I think the more pertinent question is the media's focus on Gaza over other atrocities. But another lister, I think it was DJR, outlined a number of reasons why this is the case earlier in the thread.

But because it is getting a lot of attention in the media compared to other unfolding atrocities, people will have more focus on them.

The focus is at least in part because its something we CAN have an influence on given that Israel are supposedly a western style democracy, ally and trading partner. We do not have the same leverage in Yemen. Nor are we told repeatedly by a small vocal minority (and Trump etc) that what goes on on Yemen is justfied.

I agree. I just don’t think I could personally enforce this law. I would have to resign. It wouldn’t have been law when most of these officers signed up.

Arguably we could have a degree of influence on Saudi Arabia, who have a vested interest in Yemen, though it would take a collective move by the western world to have an impact. Arguably similar to Israel. Albeit, would too much pressure from the west lead to Saudi Arabia leaning more towards Russia? That is something the western world is probably working hard to avoid.

Are we supplying arms and political support to Sudan ? Think the outrage for me personally is the fact we and many others are supplying the IDF with military support, and making mild condemnation of the actions only.

We are complicit , while as far as I’m aware we are not in Sudan.

Quite apart from that around the corner was a Palistine demo that as far as I am aware went off peacefully, these idiots knew full well they were going to get arrested! Apart from the possibility that being arrested under the terrorism act could incur a stay at HM pleasure all those people will now have on their CV arrested under the terrorism act how is that going to go down when these young ones try and get a job etc? Whether you agree with it or not these people knowingly broke one of the most serious laws you can be charged with!

I was in the area for another reason, and that's true. Trafalgar Square no issues. Outside parliament wearing tee-shirt and holding identical placards showing support. The police did not just arrest anybody only those showing support with a placard, and generally those arrested said their point and police led them peacefully to a van. I saw 4 or 5 kick off big time when arrested. There were loads of non Met police vans. Member, the police don't enact these laws and have no choice but to enforce them. If you think it's bad law you need to put political pressure on, not have a go at the police.

The point being, of course, that these are no terrorist sympathisers but people protesting against the over reach of this legislation.

You can protest against the legislation without breaking it. More subtle ways to make the point without having a placard supporting a proscribed organisation. Plenty of young people's lives are at risk of being significantly altered after yesterday. Travel bans, jobs they will not be able to do, restrictions on working in all legal professions, etc etc. I wouldn't say half of then know the consequences of what they were involved in yesterday
