National anthem booed on 00:02 - Aug 11 by ArnoldMoorhen | The most worrying thing about this reply is that you seem to be unable to see that all countries have propaganda. Singing the National Anthem, which actually is nothing about the nation and everything about one man in an inherited position reigning over us, in a crowd, in an emotionally charged atmosphere, at a big football match, is the very definition of propaganda, and has many of the features of cult-like brainwashing. The way that certain players have been highlighted and had their loyalty or patriotism questioned if they haven't sung the anthem, and indeed the responses in this thread, demonstrate the fact that those who deviate from the accepted norm, for whatever reason are viewed with suspicion and othered. Just because we call it pageantry when the Royals process around in front of the public, or the military march past them, doesn't mean that it doesn't serve exactly the same purpose of stopping people questioning the status quo, just as it does in countries we don't like when they have military parades and songs to the dear leader, which we call propaganda and a cult of personality. |
The most worrying thing is the conclusion you jump to. I was asked a direct question about Russia, therefore I answered about Russia. Its not difficult to understand.

National anthem booed on 18:29 - Aug 10 by NedPlimpton | Why am I amazed? Because it shows a bit of critical thinking rather than just blindly singing the anthem without actually thinking about what those in power have done to the people in your city. As others have pointed out, there's the policy of managed decline under Thatcher, the Hillsborough cover up and the media's take on the Liverpool fans that day, then there's also a strong Irish and immigrant population as well. There's plenty of reasons why people might not hail "King and Country". It's just they're the only ones to express it as a collective community |
I'm not a fan of the Thatcher government, but there was no policy of managed decline in Liverpool. She was advised to do it by Geoffrey Howe and others after the 1981 riots, but rejected the advice and did the opposite, appointing Michael Heseltine as her minister for regeneration in Merseyside. This was ultimately a success, laying the foundations for things like the Garden Festival, the regeneration of the Albert Dock, Tate Liverpool and others, and leading to Heseltine being granted the freedom of the city.

I am replying to the bit where you say: "However, to humour you, in Russia there are an enormous amount of people that have been brought up on state TV, propaganda and know nothing about the outside world, other than what they are told. So these poor sods sing the national anthem. Happy now ?" In which you argue that people in Russia sing the Russian National Anthem because of propaganda. And pointing out that singing the National Anthem at a football match in England is just as much an act of propaganda as similar set-piece patriotic displays in Russia. Someone even commented a few pages ago, asking why this thread was on the Football board, effectively asking: "What has the National Anthem got to do with football?" Absolutely nothing, it's simply another opportunity for the public to be expected to perform their role in the personality cult of the King.

Listen chuckles, the poster I replied to didnt ask me to write an essay in 4000 words on Propaganda. He asked me about Russia. Anyway, im not a royalist, I have no urge to sing the national anthem robustly whilst mopping my brow with a Queen Mother tea towel. However, I think booing of your own countries anthem is moronic. Hopefully that clears this up.
