And minutes silence for Jota abandoned after about eight seconds. Football is back, baby.

That doesn't change the whole history of Hillsborough, nor the fact that nothing has changed. South Yorkshire Police's recent shredding of Orgreave files proves that.

They booed the anthem long before Hillbrough.

Our national anthem is extremely antiquated. I never sing it, but may be more likely to if it didn’t celebrate an establishment that has historically been awful.

Why am I amazed?

Because it shows a bit of critical thinking rather than just blindly singing the anthem without actually thinking about what those in power have done to the people in your city. As others have pointed out, there's the policy of managed decline under Thatcher, the Hillsborough cover up and the media's take on the Liverpool fans that day, then there's also a strong Irish and immigrant population as well.

There's plenty of reasons why people might not hail "King and Country". It's just they're the only ones to express it as a collective community

I can do critical thinking, I just want to know why they think they are so hard done by as opposed to any other area of the UK. But they are cheeky and have a great sense of humour. La

But if we had a referendum on their independence, im happy to vote for it.

It would save us about Six Billion quid if they did.

There's a surprise, saying "genuine question" actually just means you want me to set you up to have a pop at Liverpool

If you were born in Russia, would you be singing their national anthem? Genuine question.

So. In the spirit of the thread.
I will state that in '78 I sang "Abide With Me" with a will and with tears in my eyes.
Proud to be there.

Perfectly reasonable, we all have to allow them to boo our national anthem because of the agendas they have over it which are more important than whatever anyone else thinks and then observe total respectful silence for the demise of one of their players because it’s very important to them.

No, i asked your reasons, you gave them and I replied. Why is that a surprise ?

The Russia example is utterly pathetic, totally incomparable to the UK, but im sure you will tell me different.

Always amazes me that people are surprised or disgusted when Liverpool boo the national anthem

Why because the Royal Family hate Liverpool - they don’t though do they 🤷‍♂️

Can’t say I mind it too much; establishment cover up and delays over Hillsborough deserves a reaction , and what scousers see as the managed decline of the city under Thatcher just adds fuel to the fire.

Really managed decline of a City?! Great city had loads of funding all good - not sure what you are talking about.

Your response completely ignored any of its content and just became a dig at Liverpool

Not really much of a discussion if all you've got is "I'd vote Liverpool out"

I notice you didn't answer the Russia question. Lots of people in Russia still sing their anthem. Would you if you were Russian?

Fwiw I'm not sure why the club ever did that, it wasn't a thing fans were demanding, asked for or even wanted and certainly not a version sung like an entry into SGRs country nights playlist

It wasn't even a song that the fans sang that much, just when it spontaneously was sung lots could join in because the lyrics were fairly simple and it went on for a while

They could just have easily gone for those were the days my friend, or Shampoo...oh oh your in trouble Ipswich came along and we burst your bubble...that was surprisingly popular at the time

Absolutely, I remember when it started to be sung back in the late 90s. It was quite a good song, the crowd used to start it off, and then it got some momentum. Those nights in the north stand where some of my favourite (only recently passed by recent years, though I have been in attendance a lot less due to logistics). Then suddenly boom, the club released the record, and then it got played (the recorded version) to death. The version that was released was always a bit naff if I recall correctly. They certainly made that version more radio-friendly!

Guess it was the buzz around when we went up....

Right, what the hell has a PM 5 decades ago got to do with booing your own national anthem in 2025? It’s so utterly pathetic.

It’s also new and trendy for them to do it even though more time has passed for what they claim it’s all about. They didn’t do it in cup finals in the 90s etc. In fact even when they played in Europe (before they got everyone banned) you can see loads of union Jacks in their end.

It’s just this new fashionable victim mentality from that fanbase.

Tourist club now anyway, that literally have to pump in volume for YNWA at Anfield.

Exactly this.

Hillsborough was an absolute disgrace by the powers that be, still nowhere near enough justice has been served.i get why they feel aggrieved on that front.

Booing the national anthem only started by them a few years ago. Before that union flags could be seen in their ends everywhere they went including during the thatcher years!

Joke of a fan base, who them themselves have been guilty of mischief pre and post 1989.
