I was thinking of Goalkeepers are Different, that had a green cover with a picture of a goalie

Same story or different, I can't remember the plot but remember it was a good read

It's every bit as bad as you'd think it would be.

Remarkably bad in fact.

The story of the kid go cart champion was very good too. His cart was called EGDAM - which was his girlfriend's name Madge spelt backwards. Had a sad ending though IIRC, he got killed in a cart race :(

Goalkeepers are Different was written by Sunday Times football journalist Brian Glanville. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it as a teenager when it came out in 1971. It's a fairly credible football based novel about the career of a promising goalkeeper.

I was a Roy of the Rovers nut. Must have had every issue for about 6 or 7 years and the annuals for Xmas. I still have bags of them up the attic somewhere.

I remember reading that several times over. I seem to recall it talking about coin throwing at Old Trafford and other places - unless I'm mixing it up with another story from my younger years.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
