Brilliant. A few weeks ago, in the middle of Lidl, they had starter kits for Spitfire, Mustang, a tank and a DUKW. I was right peeved with life that day and thought, I fancy that. Hadn't made a kit in 46 years.

Wonderful stuff. Properly mindful; I can just switch off for hours at a time, do a little bit and walk away, working in far more detail and quality than I did as a kid when my unpainted, glue-strewn Johnnie Johnson JE-J Spitfire, in all its pale blue, plasticky glory, was the scourge of the skies over my Nan's living room rug.

Oh, and that Spit and P-51 from Lidl is now 2 Spits,a second Mustang (Revell 1990s on eBay) a Hurricane (2-blade prop, no flange, obvs) and a Gladiator, Bf109 and a Tempest because Hobbycraft are currently doing 3 for 2 on Airfix in their online shop.

And I have a VERY long list of 'wants'.

They've definitely pivoted toward adults as hobbyists, but then I suppose your average 12 year old these days isn't rushing to the toyshop, tousled of hair and grubby of knee, counting their pocket money to buy a new kit.

Was this an actual historical thing or is this just a tacky marketing gimmick? What were we trying to do - was it social re-education through ale?

it literally gives you the full history about it on the Airfix page

That looks great! My buddy who is unwell at the moment (cancer) would love that. He’s into model making again and very good at it.

I used to make them when I was growing up and made loads of them. Humbrol paint, brushes, sandpaper, Stanley knife, head-swimming glue, masking tape, good to go! The great Roy Cross artwork ….whats not to like? Just opening the box was an event! I actually have an Fw190D-9 (a favourite aircraft of mine) to make up given as a gift some years ago.

I know these models are expensive, but the bigger ones like 1/24 scale always were. I actually bought as a retirement gift the above chum a 1/32 Fairey Battle in January and that was well over £30. Quite why he wanted a model of a hopeless death trap like that is beyond me, but each to their own.

I'm with you on the fw190. Purposeful, aggressive plane. Superb. Friend of mine (deceased) constructed an entire jg (squadron) of them to a very high standard. He worked for Hannants of Lowestoft who are specialist on web order models, detailing, decals etc.
As for me, like many I was an Airfix obsessive as a boy and returned to it 30 years or so later to construct Tamiya 1/35 scale german WW11 tanks of the Afrika Korps. Not to a brilliant standard but keeps me out of mischief. Still have a few kits to get busy on.

£119?!? I don't remember Airfix being that expensive when I was a kid!

I remember 1/43 kits were 17p in the early 70s which with my 15p a week pocket money mean't I could buy 1 every 2 weeks, leaving some money left over for glue and paint as occasionally required and sweets. And if my grandmother came for a visit that was always 50p extra to the fund. TWTD.

POTD.

I used to hang mine from the ceiling with cotton. The fighters in dogfight patterns with the bombers holding a level path to the drop zone over the chest of drawers.

My first Aixfix kits I used to buy cost 19p and came in a little bag.

Mind you that was around 1975 😂

Looks good, was good! Actually, a masterpiece of design. Kurt Tank described it as a cavalry horse compared to the racehorse the Spitfire and 109 were. Nice wide undercart, nifty access panels, easy change engine, first aircraft with a good visibility canopy, good cockpit layout, could take damage, carry loads and service packs, fast, manoeuvrable. Its only vices were a vicious stall and A series guise altitude performance.

The Dora 9 was essentially an interim before the Ta152. The jumbo in-line engine gave it altitude performance earlier versions lacked. It was superb. The design was so sound that the only modification to accept the longer inline engine was an insert in front of the tail to balance the aircraft. The wing was unchanged throughout its life.

Looks the dogs b’s too.

The kits for the German aircraft were always more interesting because unlike standard RAF camouflage, you got lots of different colour schemes - and of course swastilas!

I made a few tanks, but wasn’t too interested in them so didn’t bother painting them. Funnily enough, beyond the factory base sand colour, the German tankers often didn’t bother either - each tank came with a big mop and pots of green and brown camo paint. They often sold it off as a little sideline.
