Cunning marketing: Appeals to those who like ale, and also those of us who have moved on to glue.

Awesome....54 pots of paint required only makes me more excited. Thanks for the post.

£119?!? I don't remember Airfix being that expensive when I was a kid!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Although the price is higher
I really like the big spitfire
but I'd worry making the kit
that one mistake would make it not very good

That looks great! My buddy who is unwell at the moment (cancer) would love that. He’s into model making again and very good at it.

I used to make them when I was growing up and made loads of them. Humbrol paint, brushes, sandpaper, Stanley knife, head-swimming glue, masking tape, good to go! The great Roy Cross artwork ….whats not to like? Just opening the box was an event! I actually have an Fw190D-9 (a favourite aircraft of mine) to make up given as a gift some years ago.

I know these models are expensive, but the bigger ones like 1/24 scale always were. I actually bought as a retirement gift the above chum a 1/32 Fairey Battle in January and that was well over £30. Quite why he wanted a model of a hopeless death trap like that is beyond me, but each to their own.

A short Sunderland. Didn’t we have one of them? He couldn’t beat the first man with a corner.

Was this an actual historical thing or is this just a tacky marketing gimmick? What were we trying to do - was it social re-education through ale?

Just look at thad bad boy! I never made a Sunderland. Great aeroplane though. I actually visited Rochester Cathedral the other day to see the restored and very rare Short Scion. In the Cathdral is a little museum to Short Bros, as their main factory was there until after the war. It was very interesting and included a film about the company and its products. The Sunderland featured heavily of course. A truly great aeroplane. Kit looks the business too.

The best models I ever made up were a Bf110G-4 (1/72) and a Halifax Bmk3 (underrated aeroplane partially due to Harris’ loathing of Handley-Page). Ahhh, happy days with Radio Two in the background with the football on - the great Peter Jones and co.

I remember doing a larger scale Spitfire model as a teenager - lots of moving parts and it took ages to paint!

The Lancaster bomber was my favourite though and had prime position hanging from my bedroom ceiling using fishing line.

Huh. Every day’s a learning day on here. I’m not sure how I’ve managed to not know about this for so long, so thanks.

“Only a few weeks after D-Day, a newspaper ran a story that reported that only watery cider and poisoned water was available to our boys on the front.”

Good to see we had our priorities right back then!

Unfortunately, you're looking at several thousand for that.
