I don’t like our formation and never did. 15:04 - Aug 19 with 1508 viewsPacittiJohn

Our formation lends itself to surrendering possession too easily and not having cover when teams break on us. Would like to see Matusiwa and Cajuste joined in midfield by a new signing, and playing Chaplin behind Hirst and Sammie. Both fowards would benefit from playing closer together in a partnership. Having three in midfield would allow more cover when our full backs bomb forward, and enable us to retain more possession for the first 60 to 70 mins. We could then revert to Mckenna’s usual formation in the last quarter and widen the gaps with Clarke and Philogene. So 4 -3-1-2 and then 4-2-3-1. Obviously, these changes will be dependent upon whether we’re defending a lead or chasing the game, but starting with three midfielders and leaving out the wide men for the first hour should ensure that we control possession from the start in more games. We got spanked in the Premier League so many times because our midfield could not control much possession. Admittedly, this wasn’t solely due to the formation. Apart from Cajuste and Morsy we were short of Premier League talent, but in preparation for next year in the Premier League I would hope that Kieran would be more concerned with midfield strength than tricky wide men. It ain’t gonna happen though…

Mck will never give up the wide men,
But our problem ATM and hasn't been for the last three years is the midfield,
I hope for Azor he is an ok midfielder adjusting to the hustle n bustle of the championship,
Jens isn't fit at all a rolls Royce once he is,
Side note Philly if he dosent get injured will be in the championship side of the season,

Kind of like 4-3-3- which switches to 4-5-1 as required ?

How many times does McKenna have to explain our set-up for some of you to get it?

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

TBF the OP has a point, despite 2 promotions and one relegation, we still look at times like we need 3 midfielders.

That's how football (and to an extent, most games) work isn't it? If we put someone else in midfield we would be giving up something somewhere else and then we'd have posts moaning about the loss of whatever it is we gave up to make the change.

I like a 4-3-3-1 formation. Extra midfield cover without sacrificing forward options.

Probably a bridge to cross should we go up again but for now, it will be more than sufficient. I felt that we controlled most of the game on Sunday against one of our promotion rivals and pretty much nullified Birmingham's threat as well.

We will have 'easier' games to come where possession will be even more dominant and different challenges with breaking teams down.

Should we go up, I will definitely be interested to see our approach, although it will probably be a different type of player we target as opposed to big system changes.

You're right about our midfield. Offering no resistance at all, and no outlets for our defence. I think I'd rather see a back three, with the central CB sweeping in front almost as a central midfielder. Can anyone explain to me why, in anyone's tactics does Jack Clarke think he doesn't have to track back. He stood watching Jobnson trying to deal with two Saints players down their left and showed no interest in getting involved, although he was only five yards away. If we can't trust him we should move him on. I'd love to see Davis as a left winger with some defensive duties rather than the other way around.

Dunno, served us pretty well over the years. Demoting Clarke and Philogene especially to subs to make room for Chaplin is certainly an interesting approach.

Looks like not-playing-433 (or 4312 or a formation where we’re allowed to field an extra player) will be the stick to beat KM with. Also expect it’ll be forgotten when we start winning.

Some PL teams play 4231 and seem to cope [shrug]

Probably more a personnel thing than a formation thing both when we were winning and when we were losing.

As a bit of a reference point most of the teams that beat us last season played the same formation as us - so it points to 1: they have better players and 2: tactics within the formation could have been better.

We nearly failed to gain promotion as the stronger sides Leicester and Southampton largely controlled possession against us home and away. It was the impact of our substitutions and late rallys that got us promoted and we could easily have ended up in the play offs. Our squad was strong but we got promoted in spite of our formation rather than because of it.

You never did like our formation?

I could give you some credit if you said that you didn't think it worked in the Prem - but to say you've never liked it is a bit absurd, because in the 2 seasons before we lost a total of 10 games.

But hey, don't let that stop you knowing more than McKenna and most pundits who poured praise over him!

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?
