"I felt really good. It was nice. I don't want to get into saying I didn't feel free before [at Manchester City]. Out there I could drift, I could do what I want more or less and play with a bit of freedom, take more risks. I feel like I have done that."

I wonder if this is our issue, we are sucking the life out of the players

OP: you mean are players over coached? 100% they are. That Grealish comment about having the freedom to express himself us telling. Maybe that is why we are not seeing the Jack Clarke from his Sunderland days, or Szmodics ( 30+ goals) from his Blackburn days to name but two. Maybe, McKenna is too fixated on his system and trying to mould players to fit his system rather than getting the best out of them as individuals first and foremost?

I see your point but i feel it works both ways remember Kayden Jackson saying its great to play for a manager that uses what i'm good at instead of what i cant do . Or something like that . I think KM is a great manager under pressure at the moment maybe but there is a huge point that supporting him will make us come good quicker because we will come good sooner or later of that i'm in no doubt .

Guess the one thing we'd always wonder is should we have banked the cash, played our promotion team in the prem with a couple of signings, taken the hammerings, but restarted this season fresh, with the same core of players happy to be at the club, given morsy another couple of years to transition the midfield with a new cm etc etc etc

One thing for sure really, we 'll never really understand the way we 'attacked' the transfer market in our prem windows.

I said something similar on Twitter recently and, of course, got pelters for it with people saying we had to make all the signings we did in the PL. But I still think a more balanced approach, in line with what you’ve mentioned here, would have been the better way to go.

Hindsight’s a wonderful thing though. Now we’re stuck with most of those PL signings and strangely, you could argue that several of them wouldn’t even make our best XI, all things considered. At least not when compared to a combined XI featuring the promotion heroes and what we’ve currently got at our disposal.

Funny old game..

Clarke's magic seems to be to make our attacking threat disappear. Or at least to saw it in half.

Davis was incredibly productive down the left last time we were in the Championship. To mess with that is folly. To mess with that in a desperate attempt to get something out of a lightweight flop like Clarke is to compound the folly.

I don't understand how we have spent so much to get so much worse. In some areas of the pitch (Davis most obviously) the answer was just to leave well alone. But not even that was done right.

Warren Buffett often repeats the old saying that "to a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail". Just because you /can/ tinker with something, doesn't mean that you should.

I really struggle to understand what has gone wrong at the club over the last 15 months. But whatever has gone wrong has involved binning a lot of talent and downgrading at great cost.

For me we should keep leif doing what he has done best, with a caveat that oppo teams may have worked this out now which is maybe why it has been tweaked. But assuming that is not the case, the flair players should just be bought on at 60, like he did in league one, but at that point we are giving the opposition a different set of problems. That was what worked well and bought us success.

But we do need another 9 for that to happen

How do you explain Chaplins, Burns, Morsy and Luongo rise?

Those players spent the majority of their careers L2, L1 and a smattering of Championship football.

Would you say they were over coached?

I’d say it’s a case of one size doesn’t fit all.

I’m sure all football fans would agree that when you have that one Lone Ranger in the team that they are the ones you go to watch. Look at Reuser (I was youngish) but could tell he was very much more for him than the team, but we all loved that.

The 4 you mentioned are built to be team players, and excelled in that.

Need a mix of the two in a team.

Also.. we know the likes of chappers are doing their coaching badges etc. Maybe some players are just thick and genuinely can't do more than what they've been best at...

I remember at frimley. We had this striker who was incredible. When he was a youngster he was destined for league football but he was as thick as they come. He could score goals but dear God always offside. Running into no man's land. When pressing he'd run in the wrong directions. Just thick.

a niche perspective

This is exactly why Man City are struggling. No freedom. Our players are the same. The drills are drummed into them, it’s not working. Isn’t for us, isn’t for Man City. You have to let players play to their abilities. Not force stuff on them that they clearly aren’t able to cope with. Square pegs in round hole is what we have.

Are Man City struggling? I seem to remember a fairly imperious second half of last season that saw them secure CL football and they've only played 2 games this season - won 1 and Spurs always seem to be their kryptonite.

Yet Man City have been by far more successful that Everton during the time Grealish was there. Grealish is a big fish in a small pond at Everton, whereas he was one of the smaller fishes at Man C.

De Bruyne had the freedom of the park at City. You don't want loads of players going where they want. So I don't think you can extrapolate his comments to our situation. There's plenty of movement in the team. Chappers was all over the place when he came on on Saturday.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Knew a few of those at school. Were with the Colchester youth set up, give them the ball and they were great, ask them to be tactically aware, absolutely nothing.

It's not a lack of freedom.

There are 'patterns' of play and ways in which KM want us to play in different parts of the pitch but freedom isn't drummed out of the players. Football is a simple game and you want to make it easy for players, so having drills and patterns of play is sensible but within that framework you allow players to make decisions, you give them freedom.

Our issue is not that we don't have freedom.

We are playing with a lack of confidence and belief at the moment - which is hardly surprising given the season we have had. We are also having to replace the team, not strengthen - both of which contribute to a lack of belief and confidence.

You need both to play with freedom.

There is a very, very good reason we have been successful under KM over the last few years and we absolutely do not need to thrown the baby out with the bath water.

But once that 'pattern' of play is obvious to the opposition...
