Shocking pen decision for Derby.

Ball has come from two or three yards away, and arm is in a completely natural position for someone running. Nothing intentional about that at all.

I would have to disagree with you I'm afraid.

Arm is up away from his body at head height, blocking the cross/shot.

Nothing intentional about it no. But letter of the law these days that's a penalty all day long if the arm is in that position.

How he didn't give us one for Hirst however...now that truly was shocking!

Poll: Assume we have the money for one more big signing. Where do you spend it?

He's running. Try running with your arms by your side.

The law refers to an unnatural position (The law is terrible- unnatural position is effectively an indicator of intent, but we are stuck with it for now)

When running, arms are in the sorts of positions they were in this incident.

My point is from his reaction, he either knows it's a nailed-on penalty or he's trying to convince the ref the ball has hit him the face.

I think what his trying to say and what I also thought was that Leif seemed very sheepish about it and didn’t argue the decision so came across as guilty , the ref wasn’t giving it and took ages to make a decision and I think he looked at the body language of Davis and gave it as a result ! It looked a clear penalty to me

Of course- because he knows that referees give them, despite the clear conflict with what the rules actually say.

We would have been up in arms, if that penalty call was for us, and it wasn't given.

The laws are too open to interpretation as they stand BUT, in this incident the ball hit Leif's hand, and otherwise was probably on target.

fully agree, plus if it was intentional he'd have been carded (probably red)

If you are running with your hand above your head, you're doing it wrong.

Fully agree, it's not intentional but neither is the penalty we got at Birmingham, there are factors to consider.

At Birmingham, Im inclined to agree. But the hand was at least above the head which arguably was not natural.

It's definitely a pen for the. As was the Hirst incident, astonishing that the ref has booked him for diving

I think it was a penalty.

As it also was when Hirst got booked.

Totally agree, ref looked unconvinced until Leif started holding his face ! Def pen but was totally accidental so not a red for me

Lots of folks saying they thought it was a fair pen.

But the laws are clear (though poorly conceived). Unnatural position is required.

"It is an offence if a player:

deliberately touches the ball with their hand/arm, for example moving the hand/arm towards the ball
touches the ball with their hand/arm when it has made their body unnaturally bigger. A player is considered to have made their body unnaturally bigger when the position of their hand/arm is not a consequence of, or justifiable by, the player’s body movement for that specific situation. By having their hand/arm in such a position, the player takes a risk of their hand/arm being hit by the ball and being penalised"

They keep changing, but this is the current iteration.

An unnatural position, not caused by their movement / natural movement. He was running!

No way the ref was close enough to see it. Linesman on the opposite side to Davis couldn't have seen it...don't think he even flagged. So how come the plonker in black gave something that they could not have been sure of.

To be fair, he was just going to ground in an attempt to block the shot when the ball hit his arm; players' arms can be in any position when they do that, so unfortunate it caught him - didn't look like there was anything deliberate about it.

Which annoyed me, just get up don’t make the refs decision for him because I don’t think he clearly saw it.

Anyone saying that isn’t a pen genuinely has no idea about football, it must be a joke thread (I’d hope)…
