Surely Henry Gray could've been 3rd choice keeper? 09:15 - Sep 3 with 749 viewscbower

Button, for all his experience, won't get on the pitch more than once or twice, if that. Gray is 20. He has to be good enough to be 3rd choice now if they reckon he has a chance of making the grade.

Button replaced by an U21
Harry Clarke loaned or sold
Burns will be 6 months out from the end of his contract
Humphreys 2nd half loan
Baggott as above

Think there's a fair bit of wiggle room for January business, I expect we could see a fair bit depending on how we're looking in the table.

Big 20 odd games between now and then though to pick up 40+ points.

I thought the same. According to Phil's article about his call-up to the Kiwi squad he's going to be going away to the U20 World Cup in the autumn so maybe that influenced decisions.

Considering all the complaints about the quality of our keepers in the last 2 seasons, it would only take one injury and one suspension for him to be pushed into the first team limelight. I am amazed that some of our fans would be considering it.

That would not be fair on him, and certainly would add unwanted pressure onto a very young keeper. He needs to learn his craft through the U21s and then a loan.

I just hope that New Zealand don't do to him what Scotland did to Slicker.

Quite a few clubs will register an U21 keeper as their 3rd choice and then go down the emergency loan route if one of their main keepers gets injured. If we'd positioned Button in the same role as David Martin - i.e. training keeper/coach role then this might have been a path to go down.

He certainly could have filled that role, I would imagine though that there is some hope he could secure a National League loan in the coming weeks.

I've heard a lot of coaches speak on the importance of having an experienced #3, look at City with Wright, Carson and now Bettinelli, Chelsea had Green, Schwarzer, Hilario, United have Heaton.....it seems as though they come in as a mentor/cheerleader, somebody on the same level as the players but adding an extra link between them and the coaches. Ben Foster spoke about it being a vital role in the GK union.

Button might not play (although we did use 3 GK's in the league last year) but he'll have a really important part to play with all the GK's at the club.

Suspension? For a goalkeeper? If one of ours received 5 bookings (or whatever it is) I'd hope KM would de-register him anyway!

You've never heard of a keeper being sent off?!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

A club can apply to change the registration of individual players during the season (but there has to be a good reason and approval is not guaranteed). So Button could potentially have been brought into the squad in an emergency.

However, from the point of view of Gray's development, it's better for him to go elsewhere and get games.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
