Would love, and hope, to see him stand own as Mayor of Manchester and become an MP and then leader of the Labour party. Just my personal view but I think Starmer is toast and will face a leadership challenge next year. I dont think the public ever really wanted him as PM but after years of the Tories he was the least worse option. As the polls widen between Labour and Reform his own party will turn on him.

As a former Labour member, Andy Burnham would be my choice too.. Indeed, I voted from him in the 2015 leadership election.

I saw him during the hustings and he definitely had an aura and a presence when he came on stage.

David Miliband had it too when I saw him in a meeting at a Labour conference, and I voted for him as well.

It wasn't really anything to do with policy just that I have tended to vote for the person who seemed best placed to win an election. But I had buyer's remorse a couple of years ago with Starmer.

I wouldn't wish high office on anyone, particularly Andy Burnham who is far too honest to be returning to the tussle at the top of British politics. He's fine doing what he's doing, staying sane and healthy, and won't be returning.

Agreed, and the same applies to David Milliband.

I thought there was always going to be a two year period of grace for Starmer and then a leadership challenge would emerge from the 'left' of the party but with Rayner gone that looks less likely. Considering the degree of media manipulation that is going on at present (it has always gone on but internet usage and demographics that lead to a skewed information bias and take up are very marked at present) a challenger from the 'right' of the party is more likely now.

Met him at Everton away had a quick chat, invited him to my school - hoping he turns up! But hands off, he’s our mayor and he’s done a great job.

Labour are famously terrible at ensuring they have the right leader at the right time, and equally bad at removing a leader once they are in place. This is both cultural, and as a result of the party rules.

That said I don’t think Starmer will fight the next election as Labour leader. Personally I hope Streeting will, but up until a couple of days ago had assumed it would be Rayner.

Burnham has stood for the leadership before (twice?) and didn’t excel on either occasion. He’s never really impressed me, but I know he has his fans

It was just once but I don't think it was a case that he didn't excel, just that there was a rather extraordinary and perhaps inexplicable surge in support for Corbyn.

For my own part, I didn't vote for Corbyn because I didn't see him as a leader or as having a personality which was appealing to the electorate as a whole.

It is interesting to note that Angela Rayner was one of only 18 Labour MPs to support Corbyn when he was challenged by the Parliamentary Labour party. I would put that down t her loyalty to the party and its membership (who had voted Corbyn in), as opposed to her being ideologically in tune with Corbyn.

Twice. Knocked out in the first round in 2010 and came a distant second to Corbyn in 2015

He’s done well as mayor in a strongly anti-Tory area – there are some good, local commonsense policies. For example, he recently he set low transport fares for teenagers. This is good, as anyone with a kid getting across town to college in Ipswich knows.

Manchester itself is like everywhere else, though. Beholden to huge business interests, gentrified in some areas, unchanged or decaying in others. Reform on the rise.

Another essentially centrist politician is not the answer to Labour’s problems. Although I’ll concede he’d be an improvement on Starmer, who has been an utter disaster.

Thanks for the correction.

I was clearly only remembering it in terms of it being put to the members.

Anyone that is willing to back PR will get my vote. Unfortunately our two party system is what gives us such mediocre career politicians. They are complacent and short termist as they only need get more votes than one other party.

People just therefore hold their nose and vote for the least worst option, rather than anyone they actually like. I know they’ve only had a year and inherited a sh!t show but I’m pretty done with this lot, most of those constantly backing them only seem to be able to muster ‘well they aren’t AS corrupt and incompetent as the last lost’. Very few political successes to boast - even Labour’s socials are merely about attacking other parties.

I still can’t see my local GP, I was told a year to wait to see a consultant unless I go private, roads are still littered with potholes, no great civil engineering projects that you see in other major economies, no long term vision. I don’t see another change of party leader is going to make a dent in all that.

Rant over.
