Not the best but most important was Mariner for England against Hungary at Wembley. It was the goal that took England to the World Cup in 1982 after Engalnd had missed out in 1974 and 1978.

Poll: Most enjoyable calendar year as an Ipswich supporter

That was where my mind first went as well. The only Ipswich player to score in a world cup in my lifetime, and it was a bit of a belter if i remember correctly!

True story time

A much younger and hairer keno lived in Hove at the time of that match. A week before I bumped into Ron Greenwood, then England manager and also a hove resident. As I was wearing my Ipswich scarf (which I still have and is the only scarf I will wear) he said I expect you think I should play Paul Mariner next week’. My simple reply was ‘of course’

Without me England might not have qualified!

Shinned it I think, or maybe it was his knee. He was a bit lucky!

Charlie Nicholas got all the plaudits for the equalizer but this was SUCH a John Wark goal that got them back in the game.

Probably Paul Mariner's best quality goal for England at 04:06.

It was perhaps the most important stumbly goal in English football history.

Sir you do not do this goal justice!

I demand that YOU dig up the YouTube footage and transcribe what happens...

This is the greatest goal scored by an Ipswich player for any national team.
