Last night, before the backstory to the suspect was known Sky News or the Beeb (can't remember which) described Kirk as the Right wing anti trans influencer. They could have reeled off any number of subjects that Kirk was 'anti', but they only used trans. [Post edited 15 Sep 21:25]

Re. your first sentence, wasn’t the original gossip on that hellhole of a site X trying to pin it on a trans person before any details were known? I think Latinos got a mention too. Probably someone got over excited and went for the double with a trans Latino lol. They were desperate for it to be one of the ‘enemy’.
PS. I wouldn’t put it past MAGAs to spin this into the fault of trans people just through association. You can see it now: the shooter was corrupted by the evil trans monster (they’ll dehumanise them too of course). Hopefully not, but it wouldn’t surprise me. [Post edited 15 Sep 21:21]

It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy on here, although we’re not influencing the 24 hour media coverage. I still find that odd. I can’t remember anything like it before (more likely because my memory’s rubbish). This is the sort of coverage we only normally see for the death of a royal or similar. | |

One of the big issues here IMO is use of misinformation by the likes of Kirk.
For all the discussion about debates, a conversation where one side offers the truth and one side offers lies is not a debate. It's not possible to have a meaningful debate with people relying on misinformation, because they don't have to back up their arguments with facts and can just pull any old nonsense out of their backside (as our Prime Minister before last used to do). And, yes, of course the person relying on the truth can point that out, but as we've seen for the last 15+ years in the UK, that doesn't cut through.
Politics needs a reset, and I would like to see that reset being all sides agreeing to stop using misinformation. Programmes like Question Time and leaders' debates need a real-time fact checker.
But it's not going to happen; the right in particular have become more and more reliant on misinformation over the last 20 years to the point where their lies are Trumpishly blatant. And what's worse is that their supporters don't care. As long as they're 'owning the libs' or whatever the term is, they'll accept it until it really hurts them (like the infamous 'I voted Tory but didn't think they'd cut MY benefits' woman on QT). And I'm not sure we can get out of this mess given social media allows people to lie (and now be openly racist) with impunity.
One thing I very much appreciate about having moved to the Falkland Islands is that it is very human. Nearly everyone knows each other; there are no political parties and there is no dehumanising of anyone by any of the politicians. The tone of the one newspaper is as far from the Daily Mail as you can imagine. | | | |

QT used to be essential viewing for me. As far back as when it was presented by Sir Robin Day. I haven't watched it in the last ten years. | |

if you can point me to anything i have said to defend him please do. if you can't then please stop lying. objecting to people justifying violence against 'fascists' but then being unable to define the term, and objecting to people claiming that college students lack the cognitive skills or the frontal lobe development to be exposed to right wing views, is not defending anything. it is objecting to idiocy. | |
