Thought he looked good.

I don't get the hate from some. He looks a battler, has some pace, gets in good positions, forward and back, keeps it pretty simple. Very solid. Yes he's not omari, but I don't think he needs to be.

I think a lot of it is the price tag, which is completely irrelevant now. He's in, he's capable, let him get on with it and judge him on his play for the team.

The jury still has to be out. He's not been here long.

But on what we've seen, I don't see anything better than Burns (who I quite appreciate is unavailable).

I would be more excited to see Walle Egeli start ahead of McAteer, but maybe that's the kid in me, and maybe Kieran knows what he's doing. Would certainly like to see Walle Egeli get at least 30 minutes on a regular basis.

Kieran coaxed and coached Omari into the side really skilfully, and as long as we're winning, he can take his time with Walle Egeli too, but he's a hell of a talent.

I think we just don't know what he is yet. It's unfair on him that he will be judged on the £12 mil. If we signed him for £3-4 mil it would make more sense.

The strange thing is Ogbene going and him costing us big fee to replace. Unless something we don't know it feels like Ogbene would be just as good and £12 mil better off. I assume with no guarantee on Egeli we pressed button on McAteer.

Think he is maybe seen as the longer term Burns replacement. Good engine on him and solid squad player hopefully. Egeli just has an x factor about him! How he carries it.

Poll: Who do we think McKenna (not you) will partner Greaves with ?

I’ll say one thing, Furlong won’t go anywhere near as far forward so Mcateer will be covering a lot more ground to support the defence and then working to get forward to support attacks.

Nothing glamorous there, nothing outstanding, but physically looks strong and will do a lot of unnoticed work.

He’s got a tough job.

Decent off the ball, offered very little on it.

We essentially ignored our right hand side when we were attacking last night. In part as Jaden was so good. Mcateer is a solid enough player but I do think that is he all he is, which is ok if your other winger plays like that.

Hmm, not sure. Obviously we've often used that side of the pitch to be more workmanlike while a lot of creativity happens down the other flank but even accepting that I'm yet to be that convinced by him.

Time to grow into the role of course and it doesn't help having a different player behind him every game but doesn't seem to have the strength or decision making that Burns has. Certainly if Burns was fit and available I'd be sticking him in as first choice.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Hard to judge on the TV. He didn’t seem to be involved much. A couple of attempted crosses, which were poor. He didn’t take anyone on from what I saw. Maybe he was working hard more off the ball, but you miss that on TV. I was thinking at the time I would prefer Wes, as at least you know he’s going to try to isolate his full back and then have a go, which gets bums off seats.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Did an important job diligently, tracking the dangerous Burrows.

Much like Burns would’ve done.

Poll: Right, we’ve all slept on it. Let’s settle this?

I agree.

The first chunk of 2023/24 I thought Omari Hutchinson was a lightweight moody waste of space. It took him a few games to settle and a few more to show what he could do and to begin to prove me completely wrong.

McAteer did alright last night. Not spectacular but ok. Give him and the team time. As for the fee, I sense people are way off the pace when it comes to 2025 valuations. This isn’t 2021-2023. Transfer ‘inflation’ has put all the old values in the bin.

Would Broadhead with a year on his contract have made £10m three years ago? Doubt it. £1m if you were lucky. £40m for Chelsea’s Nkunku who was one of the worst opposition forwards to visit Portman Rd last year. Really??

Anyway, it’s not McAteer’s fault we paid what we did for him and while it’s high fashion for some to scapegoat a player and stick the boot in, I’d prefer to see him given a chance to settle and show what he can do after a bit of McKenna-coaching.

More to come. Very good with the press. A bit sloppy with the ball.

Looks like a player that can really be 'coached'.
