Seen a lot of talk of Godfrey being crap on Friday... 10:17 - Sep 16 with 1801 viewstractorboy1978

Sure, he didn't exactly have a great game but I think it does Philogene a disservice. I am not sure what more he could have done re goals 2 and 3? It was just class from a player that if he can find consistency is going to prove too much for virtually all full backs at this level.

Don't think I have seen a professional footballer just give up as he did against Clarke, more I look at it the more shocking it is.

Yes, Philogene was unplayable

Taking nothing away from Clarke or Jaden.

Ben Godfrey, I am sure, actually has struggled since Covid - I don't think he has ever fully recovered and it affects him in matches and training.

Add in Leif's performance to make sure Tanganga was unable to back him up didn't help either.

There's an element of that, Philogene was cooking and on his day he's too good for this level. It was a perfect storm of both being true I think, the 1st was far too soft and Godfrey wasn't tight enough, there was already a warning sign a few minutes earlier that Cooper saved. similar for the 3rd albeit harder to stop when Billy can go both ways and punish teams like that. 5th was just dreadful, Clarke had no right to do him so easily.

2nd a bit unlucky to be fair, he shows him inside and Matos steps across him.

Godfrey's getting binned after that performance for me though, nowhere near good enough but certainly still a huge amount of credit to Philogene for punishing that.

I am wondering why he's at full back now. Wasn't his best spell in the middle?

As I said on another thread, re Philogene 3rd goal.
He had scored two with his right foot and every defender is trained to force a player onto his weaker foot. Godfrey did that for the 3rd, he kept in front of Philogene's right foot, but Philogene switched to his weaker left foot and smashed it into the net. When a footballer is in that form in a game you need help from another player.

Same with the runs from Leif, not a single SU player tracked Leif, that added to Godfrey's problems. If Philogene had played the ball to Leif and Leif had scored a couple, people would blame the FB, Godfrey, for allowing Leif to run beyond him.

Look at the 2nd goal, Godfrey had moved Philogene across the pitch, there were CBs and midfielders there, and not one got a block in.

Yes, Godfrey was poor, but Philogene was unstoppable.

JP played well, and took his chances very well.

But he won’t have an easier defender to play against all season

Don't underestimate the work Leif was doing either.. No one was tracking him.
Godfrey didn't know whether to stick or twist a few times. And those short moments of hesitancy are exactly what the hard running is designed for.
Phylogene took full advantage.

Godfrey had a stinker. But there were a few of ours that were really good. And a few of theirs that showed very little fight and effort.

Incidentally, I watched the Bundesliga highlights. And they have a graphic showing the speed at which the ball is travelling if a player leathers one in.... I wonder what the speed of Phylogene's third goal was travelling at.?.. He caught that so sweetly.

Godfrey got taken to the cleaners. He was also left high and dry by his team mates. But Philogene certainly was excellent. I can’t remember a hat trick quite like that.

One of the first games where Philogene has consistently gone at, and past, the full-back.
Too often he has put his foot on the ball and laid it off.

How much of Friday was due to Davis bombing on, Jaden's confidence or Godfrey just making it too easy for him will become clear soon enough.

The Cooper save was definitely dreadful by Godfrey, seemed like he just backed up all the way past the 6 yard box and let Philogene just keep going.

It would be interesting to see if there are stats for Godfrey at ITFC and SUFC. I don't think I ever saw him attempt a tackle for us. All he did was jockey a player and back off and he played just like that for the blunts. I feel for the lad as he was once a decent player, but something is clearly wrong with him now.

He was poor Friday.

Although I'm sure, like anybody, he'll improve as the season goes on, with a flow of games.

He just hasn't played enough football since leaving Everton, 3 for us, 3 so far for Sheff Utd - he'll be a solid operator at this level when he finds a flow.

I think he misunderstood the question. He is definitely right footed. He also said on Radio Suffolk he enjoys playing at here at Playford Road.

Getting within 3 yards of his man might help?

Great for us and Jaden but that's the worst individual performance I've ever seen from a defender.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Also had the conditions to do it, finding him early on the counter attack, with others making intelligent runs to create him space. Rather than facing up against 10 men parked inside their own box like we saw at Preston and against Derby.

The TownTV GeniusIQ game replay shows this. The full game replay isn't out for the Sheffield game yet, so can't say how fast it was. Here's how it's shown from the Derby game..
