Boro - a threat or not…?! 21:57 - Sep 19 with 4270 viewsPortman_Pie

Just a decent run at the start of the season - or do we think they could be long ‘runners’ and a threat?

Hard to rule them out currently, well managed by Edwards?

I've been reliably informed on here that they aren't a promotion rival. In fairness it's very early days.

Can't knock there points average after 7 games is what you want will hold them in good stead for the next month+,
I didn't think they weren't anything special and second time I've seen hackney and didn't think he was anything special,,
Will we end up above them yes,

I thought they were fortunate to get the win today. Brom had a few pretty good chances. Sometimes it is your year if you keep sneaking results. Remember 92 we were very unfancied, but we did it.

It’s all about winning. They are winning. We’ve just got the one win. So, yes. They are a rival.

I’m not sure on them. Thinking they’re a bit lucky early doors and will drop off.

Hope so - there’s not much stand out talent there - other than Hackney - but he didn’t shine to me this eve

They've faced a decent cross-section of teams. Shown good consistency. No reason to think they cannot keep it up.

Shouldn't be a surprise, Boro have regularly been in the hunt for the play-offs for several seasons now, actually making them in 2022-23.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

They've massively under performed in recent years

They seem to have had a major slump at some point in both the last two seasons, leaving them short of the play-offs.

Believe they started the season as third fav of the non-parachute clubs, behind Brum and Cov, so a more popular pick than us back then from your description (before my time).

I thought Azaz would be a big loss but they haven't missed him greatly yet.

we were very unfancied last time too, the team with the points will always be a threat!

It's hard to think that a team 10 points ahead of us is not a threat, but let's hope we can cut it to 7 tomorrow.

the amount of teams who have got off to a flier and then faded is pretty large. Still far too early to tell.

Looking at the stats from their games I would think they're probably going to have to up their attacking output to challenge for top 2 - they seem to be going a long way on relatively few shots/low XG at the moment. But at the same time they look quite solid

If pushed I'd say they look like a playoff challenging team that have had a good run rather than an automatic promotion challenger at this stage, but they could keep it up!

yes, you can get fortunate runs; in mick's last season we kicked off with 5 straight wins, scoring from virtually every chance.

you can then regress to the mean or it can be the inspiration to kick on (spoiler alert, we then lost 7 of the next 9!). hope boro follow our lead, but think they've got enough to be up in the playoffs

Solid 2-0 win against a fellow decent side..

They took their chances, when neither side created loads.

Think Brom will be annoyed at the manner of the first goal. Very avoidable.

Fancied Brom for an equaliser at 1-0. But the 2nd goal really put the result to bed, despite a late consolation.

I think we'll finish above both these sides.. But fare play to Boro. Grinding out results is what its all about. But neither side looked "scary". And both sides look like they can be got at.

Could see us getting overran in midfield verses Boro'. But I'm sure KM will have an answer for that.

10 points above us currently and been in or around play offs for a few years them and Cov are biggest threat from existing teams from last season I'd say.

It's amazing.... we win one game... just one game out of five... and we're instantly at the top of the league. And we're so good, we can even decide who are our nearest competitors.

After last week, I'm far more optimistic and I'm really hopeful we can climb the table... but I'm going to wait until we are top two or there or there abouts for a few weeks before we start puffing our chests out as champions elect. That one season in the PL ( where we were sh1t) went to some people's heads.

Have to agree - it does come across quite an entitled view (sort of thing we vilified the parachute team fans for last time out in the Champs).

Looking at our start, and the table, I imagine it’s the Boro fans wondering if WE are a threat…

Everyone wrote us off after a good start ‘they’ll fade’ - we didn’t, so I wouldn’t write Boro off at this stage either. Though they probably don’t have the depth of squad once injuries and suspensions start hitting.

We were 5th or 6th in the betting to begin with iirc, but unfancied by the pundits to remain ahead of Leeds certainly.

I watched about 65 minutes of that last night, and what a complete bore fest. If we’re not challenging at the top end of the table come May then we’ve sh!t the bed.

Agree with this. It feels like a top 6 of us, Southampton, Leicester (subject to points deductions), Coventry, Boro and Birmingham is already feeling likely, based on performances, results, and squad strength.

All teams will have strong and weak periods, and with our squad we should be comfortably at the top of that pack, but the great thing is that football isn't that simple!

I don't think this is entirely fair, I took this thread as coming from a place of "given that we hope to be top 2 competitors..."

This seems a reasonable thought experiment to engage in to me, given the resources and expectations around the club (externally, not just internally). If it were staff/players thats different, but we're fans and thinking about long term possibilities for the season (beyond just the first month) is reasonable and shouldn't attract much criticism imo
