Cobbold Stand Redevelopment 10:25 - Sep 23 with 4100 viewsLA_Tractor_Boy

Obviously MA has already said the Cobbold Stand redevelopment is part of the medium to long-term plan, but I really can't see it being necessary unless we're established in the PL for 3+ seasons.

Looking at the ticketing site, there are plenty of non-RV seats available for Charlton and the club are struggling to sell tickets for the existing hospitality areas. Even the Norwich fixture still has availability.

If the numbers add up, then putting a new roof on the West Stand, adding the 4,000 seats MA mentioned and getting rid of all the RV seats is all that is required IMO.

Has anyone heard any more about these plans for the West Stand?

This was said by MA in one of his interviews earlier this year

Cheers, I missed the MA interview.

How does that make sense though, if Town own the land it's built on? The details of the plans announced late last year indicated that the council would sell the land the current car park off Portman Road to the club, for the club to build the new multi story car park.

So town pay for, and own, the land and pay to build the car park. Then the council get the car park fees? Seems unlikely.

They haven't bought the entire car park, they have bought some of land to allow for redevelopment and reorientation of the road?

IBC are planning to build a multistory and an aquatics centre on the site which they will run?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Part of the story about availability of RV tickets is the matchday pricing. £50 for restricted view (£43 for severly restricted)

A note of caution. The building of what are now the Cobbold and the West stands cost a lot of money and at a time of not so deep pockets cost us valuable players.
You could argue that it is only now that the ground is nearing capacity that they are paying for themselves.

You could argue the same about the North and South stand redevelopments, but over 20 years ago now. Imagine having a capacity of 22k.

I don't think we'll see much talk of redevelopment for a while yet.

Are you saying building a new stand under this ownership might make us sell players again?
Or are you saying the Cobbold has another 20 years in it?

Because, I have to tell you, both are untrue.

Cheltenham Blue nailed this when he said the decision is not about the number of seats. It will be a very hard nosed decision based on return on investment. For Premier League we are massively under provisioned on hospitality. Hospitality these days is all about the lounges like Three Lines in West Stand, 7 days a week income.

I wouldn't be surprised to see plans change as I'm not sure the 4k West Stand expansion will give a return on investment. A brand new Cobbold Stand loaded with lounges would for sure, although might not provide more seats for 'normal' fans.

Same reason new season tickets won't be sold for a while, hospitality is the priority. Maybe football is lost given above but it is where we are at.

The problem with the West Stand was that it was paid up front relatively, hence when crowds dropped players had to be sold and it became a cycle of decline.

The North and South were paid for via the bond which meant there was a payment to be made every year, which proved unsustainable when we were out of the Premier League. Hence there were a few payment holidays negotiated before Norwich Union eventually gave it up and sold the debt to Marcus Evans for 5p in the pound.

I disagree. The turnstiles had another 10 years and more after Clegg bought that tin of cheap paint. Sparkling like a shilling on a sweep’s rear end they were. Things of beauty.

Send Ashton to B&Q for another 20 tins of cheap gloss, get it slapped on the East Stand by anyone standing idle and it’ll be good for another 54 years. I’m sure the basic structure is sound and there’s no wood in it. Just crumbling concrete so no fire risk.

Toilets? Easy solution - portaloos like the fetid boxes of horror they used to have at the river end in Craven Cottage. Put one behind each pillar and for the loss of say 50 seats, facilities upgraded!

Corporate stuff: easy. Just move the mouldering Fanzone tent onto the Portman Rd pitch on weekdays. Job done!

Should do like Ewood Park, where you can rinse your hands on the pitch.

You have to hope Blackburn didn't sabotage the plumbing so the pitch pool was fed directly from the urinals!

A new modern roof on the west stand will revolutionise the stadium, it will allow a huge amount of extra light. Great idea!

This was spoken about by the tour guide on our recent stadium tour. The additional tier on the west will allow the later Cobbold decant, but will also help us meet a capacity of 40k which will allow the hosting of internationals (including womens).

You may joke about turnstiles, but some of them the club were using until relatively recently at least were bought second hand from Bedford Town in the late 1950s. I reckon we'd have got another century out of them. Not sure they're not actually still in use, just not been through one for a while.

I am saying that last time those stands were built (in the 70's) we had to sell players to fund them.

That it is only now, in the last few years, that that extra capacity has been really useful and making money. Yes there have been odd games where we have used the full capacity, but those have been rare.

The Cobbold has years left in it. Yes it could withstand an upgrade in facilities but to spend £100m to totally replace it is something that has to be very carefully considered.
