RIP Billy Vigar..... 19:17 - Sep 25 with 3375 viewsBloots

....the Chichester City player has died after colliding with the wall surrounding the pitch at the weekend.

This isn't the first time this type of situation has happened, it's a disgrace that football grounds at any level have walls around the pitch.

Over the last few years I've noticed more and more players at the top level pushing players off the pitch as they run towards the touchline at speed, and I fear it's only a matter of time before a more "high profile" player is seriously injured because of it.

It needs to be taken very seriously.

Yeah we'll just fold the club, good argument.

The FA ground rules state we must have a fence/wall of some sort around the pitch, so the risks are still there, whatever we replace it with.

Padding is probably the best option, but the FA would need to help financially.

What kind of asshole decided it was a good idea to build a wall around a pitch to begin with?

In indoor athletics, when they do the 60/80 metre? sprint in smaller venues, they have padded barriers that the athletes crash into as they can't slow down in time. I can't see why non league clubs can't invest in padding to cover the walls. Get the padding printed with sponsors to offset the cost, or set up a crowdfunding site, if you are that hard up as a club, but people dying in a game of football because of a concrete/brick wall just should not happen in this day and age.

I'm involved in a semi-pro team in Scotland. Getting "sponsorship" isn't at easy as that. We've lost our 3 main sponsors from last season as people cut back etc. This has caused issued for us on an operational level. Thankfully we don't quite have the wall situation like Chichester (or other clubs) have, but you can't just wave a wand and get a sponsor to pay or find a new one if they're not there.

who ever is in charge of your commercials hasn't done a good job there Fife, should never really allow an opportunity where 3 main sponsors can pull out at the same time... He should be more careful with his contracts.

The biggest travesty here was that after the incident at Bath 2 years ago the lessons weren't learned, instead it's taken the life of a young man to highlight this. So sad...

It really doesn't work like that at this level. You're viewing it at a much higher level than a non league club at tier 8 or 9. Sponsorship is only done yearly at this level.

What a weird comment!

Probably 90% of grounds built in the 80s mate.

Have you actually been involved with running a club?!

Its not like running a business, its run entirely by volunteers, its nowhere near as cut and dry as you are making out.

Nah dont let them give you that excuse, I had sponsors on 2/3 year deals money upfront when i did it at frimley and that was step 6 - Think thats tier 9, I do always forget the tiers though

Banner sponsorships for example, offer out as 1/2/3 year deals, discounts dependent on how many years they sign up for, same with shirt sponsorship, clubhouse sponsorship, stand sponsorships etc etc.

The only sponsorship that should be yearly at any level is the player/manager sponsorships, but everything else absolutely can be sold as multi year sponsorship packages.

Yes wally, I was indeed

And tbh if your clubs not run off the pitch like a business, then it's flawed.

Run it like a business, you'll reap the rewards on the pitch

Happened under me with league promotion, club self funded budgets etc It can absolutely be done

I'm sorry it doesn't work that. Times are far harder. If we turned round and said we'd want 3 years worth of sponsorship before we give them advertising etc, they'd just say they can't afford it and we don't get any sponsorship at all.

The days of dictating to local businesses (who you NEED to keep onside) are long gone. In most cases, you'll happily take what you can to survive. Why lose, say £500 or £1,000 when you demand a three year deal. A lot of local business might not want to commit that far ahead when they're equally trying to survive in today's world.#

I fear you're either in a very affulent area or you are out of touch. And as Wally says, we're all volunteers trying to keep our local football club. Business negotiation skills of Trump (bad example), Musk (bad example), Branson etc are not our fortay but we're just trying to support and help our local football club survive and do the best they can in a dwindling climate.

I think it was Greaves who in the first half pushed one of the Blackburn players down the slope and against the wall.

I thought that was appalling.

Understandably, the player reacted angrily but fortunately he didn't get injured.
[Post edited 26 Sep 7:40]

Yes, really stupid and he was lucky not to o be sent off for that.

It should be classed as violent conduct, in my opinion, because the player who is pushed doesn't see it coming and so is effectively sucker punched and neither player is then in control of the outcome.

For Greaves to do it with the pitch in that condition was particularly stupid.

Am I missing something here with all these comments? As far as I can tell Portman Road has a concrete wall along side all sides of the pitch. Might be hidden by advertising hoardings but it's a wall.

Which comments? I don’t think the professional game is necessarily immune to this either, it’s just the recent 2 serious incidents have happened at semi professional level and that’s where you tend to find tighter grounds with inappropriate materials.

The problem for me is the FA ground grading rules probably aren’t sufficient in terms of run-off distances between the pitch and any perimeter, if we’re honest. We all want these tight grounds with big atmospheres but when you’ve got big athletes thumping around that brings a risk. The fact the requirement for new grounds is a greater distance than existing ones suggests this is probably already recognised, but deemed difficult to insist it of existing grounds.

The other factor is the materials used and lack of anything / padding to soften the blow at certain grounds. It’s not an easy problem to solve for but it is an absolutely necessary one IMO.
