| They say you know when it's time. 20:12 - Sep 29 with 4229 views | BanksterDebtSlave | ...but when your dog is 19 years and 4 months old I'm not so sure. He can't see or hear much, does lots of standing and looning around but still has a good appetite and manages a walk every day. After this long I think it might be hard having to call time on the old boy so we have all given him our permission to die and here's hoping he goes out naturally. I'm not sure that ever happens though....or does it? | |

It has taken me by surprise and seeing how it is hitting Junior is hardest of all, but we'll muddle our way through. So many positive memories so worth a little pain at the end. |
We had an Irish Setter and then a Spinone when I was a kid. They were also buried in their beds. My dad always used to plant a tree at the site where they were buried and that served as a wonderful reminder of an irreplaceable family member when the tree was budding. Of course, in the end the feeling of loss is replaced by happy memories and a beautiful tree helps with that. All the best, chap.

I held my best friend in the garden, under her favourite tree, as the vet administered the kindest needle, and I swear I felt her soul pass through me as she departed. I believe I let out some kind of howl, and whilst there was the deepest sadness in it, there was also relief. The pain lasted (and softened) for years, as it does with any close family member. Here's to all our departed friends, still chasing sticks, balls and squirrels in some far away woodland.

That is a good innings. As long as it eats/ drinks and goes to the toilet okay, then it is probably happy enough. if it is in any pain, you will probably be able to sense it if it becomes intense. Had a labrador that reached 18, which is pretty good for a bigger dog.

i also also used to be owned by Spinones (two) - wonderful dogs, wonderful breed, becoming more popular in the UK but must still have been quite rare in your childhood (unless you're younger than I had you down as!). The first of mine had the "wrong" coat, was a bit of a throwback to Bracco Italianos, one of the breeds Spinones are descended from. He was the most intelligent animal I've ever encountered - thought conceptually. If we were about to go out in the Landrover - evidence keys, handbag etc. - he'd deliberately take himself off to have a pee and a drink before getting in - preparation & thinking ahead!

Wonderful dogs, Spinones. I'm not sure that Leonardo, our Spinone was quite as conceptual in his thinking as yours. He was however a huge slobberchops and significantly brighter than our Setter, but no more loving.

That's quite something and what we hoped for but wasn't quite to be. I bet your brother's dog was a terrier.

My childhood pooch (a long haired dachshund) had a tree planted on top of him, the poor old lad. I will always remember him being bamboozled when I went off to uni. I went in my own car, so he’d seen me leave, but then my parents followed with him a bit later. The look on his face when I met them at the other end was priceless. Complete confused, and then he went nuts lol. They’re family.

| They say you know when it's time. on 21:10 - Dec 15 with 48 views | itfc_bucks | This time last year, our cat got hit by a speeding driver. I buried him in a blanket in our garden, my 12 year old son insisted on it. Didn't want the old boy to get cold. Fcking miss that old cat. Love the two others we have and our idiot of a spaniel, but he was our first family pet and was absolutely irreplaceable. Godspeed Spot. Bless you BDS | |

Ours was a Parsons. The vet said she had encountered 3 twenty-somethings, all terriers. [Post edited 15 Dec 21:17]
