What to do when struggling for work motivation? 10:36 - Oct 8 with 1158 views | ThisIsMyUsername | As per the title. My current motivation levels for my job are around 0.5/100. I can perform my required tasks but everything seems to take as long as the Titanic doing a 3-point turn in a narrow canal. I go through a never-ending cycle every 6-12 months of: look for new job > find new job and be happy with it > burn out 100% and check out. Probably means I am not working (still) in an industry/line of work which is for me. I am WFH and 100% in charge of my own schedule, which I am incredibly grateful for but I can't do this job forever or even idefinitely. Currently looking at taking a third Degree in a completely new industry. What to do?

Work to live. With that said, it would be amazing if I enjoyed my job. I'm not 'work to live' to the point of being content doing a job I hate as long as it allows me a lifestyle that works. The fact I am very introverted (and potentially 'neurodiverse') means that jobs which require constant human interaction, and 'performance' on my part are exhausting. For some reason I decided to go into the health-related fields, though I've subsequently learnt some of these things about myself in the past few years since being in this industry. My current job is also very repetitive (whilst also requiring the constant human interaction and performance) and is becoming quite mind-numbing. Last edit: A job where I can be left alone to crack on, which I enjoy, and retains time and energy to go out and get social interaction on my own terms would be ideal. [Post edited 8 Oct 10:46]

Possibly, yes. That and/or ASD. So one and/or the other could also be a factor. I am in my early 30s and also aware of the need to work for another 30 years which creates some feeling of pressure to find something both ASAP and which I feel is future proof and, most importantly, sustainable for myself. Currently considering a computer science course (despite having never had any interest in computers; not to say I couldn't develop one) which would take up to 4 years to complete but hopefully open up a lot of remote opportunities which require less of the things which I currently struggle with in healthcare. I do have hobbies/past-times I enjoy, such as gym work or simply being out and about in nature. My current job makes these easier for me (for example, I can go for a morning workout and begin working later than if I needed to go to an office). I don't really struggle for motivation and focus with my own personal interests, for example, getting to the gym, and currently learning a new language. I wish I could focus on these things all the time but of course that't not how life works.

If your goal is to pursue a career in programming, I would avoid a Computer Science degree for the moment. There are plenty of ways to learn it online without doing a degree. If you're looking to get into though, feel free to PM me.

This could be an option provided I could come up with an idea in something novel. Doing what I do currently but for myself would not appeal to me.

I could go to a 4-day week even as a temporary 'solution' and it is something I have considered, just to avoid the 'doing this every day' feeling. As it happens I am currently living in Europe for 3 months thanks to the online job.

A tree surgeon is something I've often thought appealing for its freedom, depending on whether you like heights. I think it is also quite well paid, certainly given the amounts I have been charged over the years. But it probably isn't something you can do on your own.

What to do when struggling for work motivation? on 11:18 - Oct 8 with 767 views | Mookamoo | Have you considered doing something alongside your work - maybe some volunteering? I'm self employed and WFH, and because I'm in control of my time, it gives me space to do some youth work. Just once or twice a week at a local youth centre. It's total chaos, but there is something about it that helps me reset my head because it's immediate and nothing to do with my day-to-day work. I don't get involved in the behind the scenes stuff, so there are no added responsibilities. I just try to teach them how to play pool and not buy stuff off the man outside the vape shop. I've found that really helps me focus once I'm back in the office.

I admit maybe it's a lot harder in today's world than it was when I started working in the 60's. I moved from job to job. The first one I had lasted 1 year. The second around 4 years. The third for 1 year. The fourth about 3 months, the fifth around 3 years, the 6th 25 years, the 7th 10 years and the eighth which was part time just under 5 years. Some I hated, some I tolerated and some I quite enjoyed, When I look back do I wish I'd have done something completely different ? You bet I do. Unfortunately life gets in the way. I worked to live. To bring up my kids and now in later life to have what I can afford and to help where I can my kids and grandchildren.

This! I'm 44, have moved around jobs, relationships, never sticking to one. Lack of motivation and procrastination have been at the forefront of everything throughout my life. I'm self-employed and have the opportunity to be successful etc etc but am struggling to get things moving, every day is a cycle of getting up, feeling motivated, then being overwhelmed when trying to make a start so randomly begin tasks that i never finish to then end the day feel angry at myself for getting nothing done. Unbeknown to me, after a friend recommended that i speak to the doctor, i've been diagnosed with ADHD. Suddenly, everything made sense and i could relate so much of what i do to this condition. Its something i wish i had known 20 years ago as it has affected so much of my life but i can at least work with it now. Maybe something to look into as its massively undiagnosed in adults.

Have you considered EMT or Paramedic? I am ADHD and have done this job for 26 years now. In recent years it has been recognised that a higher percentage of ambulance staff show signs of, or are diagnosed, ADHD. Yes the job involves contact with the public, but you're not trying to sell them anything and, in most cases, they will give you their full attention and respect. Responding to an emergency requires a high level of short term focus, which is where we can excel. As well as that, the dopamine rush that comes after helping someone in need, or from being involved in a large incident, is something people with ADHD crave and chase. Of course not every day is exciting but when you go to work you never know what the shift will bring. The pay isn't great but the rewards are high for someone who is easily bored.

It's definitely something I've considered as a means of increasing social activity alongside a WFH job. And if I did go down another route work-wise, I could perhaps find a volunteering opportunity relevant to my original training. I'll need to come back to it and see what is available near me.

Did you particularly enjoy the 6th one or was it necessary to stay in for so long due to your circumstances?

I've heard of so many people in recent times being diagnosed with ADHD. Really interesting. I wonder whether it has been as prevalent throughout human history, or if it has increased in recent times.

Sounds like something you really enjoy and which works really well with having ADHD. It is certainly something I've considered (amongst many other things). The main thing that would put me off would be the nature of having to work a 24/7 shift pattern. A good amount of routine (with reasonable flexibility) around sleep and meal times and other habits are particularly important to me.
