Agreed. We’ve played under McKenna with an attacking midfielder as the 10.
Chaplin was a creative player with an eye for goal.
As was broadhead as was Hutchinson.
We now play a second striker in the 10. Doesn’t suit us.

For the last 5 weeks prior to this one you. We're really thinking we need to get that overpriced super signing Philogene out the team and that overpriced guy who come on for him Clarke out of the team. 9 goals between them in the previous 5 is unacceptable!!!
We lost a game of football away to the team at the top now and weren't at our best. Even then a pen missing away from it being very different.
We then turn on the players and claim players who weren't getting in our team would have been the difference.
Annoyed as anyone else but we need to move on and we needed to get better players to give us a chance with our ambitions. | |

What have Akpom and Szmodics shown for us so far to make you think that? |
Akpom looks a bad fit for that role in the pocket. He looks to me like someone who wants to play off the shoulder of the CB and run in behind, not someone who’s happy playing with his back to goal linking play. But I could be talking bobbins and he should be flexible enough at this level. I’d argue there’s an outside chance of him being better covering Hirst as he’s played a lot of football as a striker. |  |

Philogene has had a remarkable purple scoring phase. He can't sustain that, if he does he is a genius player. If I ignore for one moment his recent scoring I have not seen that much in his game, though his defensive work is improving. If that soft pen won us that game it would have been the ultimate smash and grab. We got nothing because we deserved nothing. | | | |

I don't think its Chappers per se, but neither Szmodics or Akpom is helping to link play in that 10 role.
The ball is coming to Hirst's feet and Szmodics is beyond him looking for a headed type flick. Whereas what he should be doing is standing facing Hirst to take the ball from him allowing Hirst to turn and run into a channel. Thats how it worked in the promotion season.
Szmodics does seem to struggle with reading the game sometimes. No problem with looking for a flickon if its coming to Hirst's head, but not when its coming to his feet. It's why too many of out attacks are breaking down. |  | | |
