Personally I think it's a good idea to ensure integration, there are pockets of communities in the UK where English is not spoken and unknown to a decent level. The same applies to Brits abroad. I've visited Thailand a large number of times and it's blooming rare to hear expats speak Thai. |  |

I'm pretty much a woke lefty in lots of these immigration debates and I have no problem in these policies and find this portrayal a bit weird to be honest.
As others have pointed out many many other countries have very similar things. There are a multitude of hoops to jump through to be a citizen or get extended leave to remain in many countries. Speaking the language and doing a bit of community work doesn't seem ridiculous. Especially after years already here, this is about citizenship and staying forever is it not? Not popping over for a few months for work. 'A-level' standard is surely just a way of quantifying, whereas if it was 'a good standard' or whatever then it would be lept on as unclear and vague. |  | | |

I had to spent some time at a hospital recently, and the reliance on immigration to make the NHS function is there to see. Everybody spoke good enough English, and they certainly do enough to help society already, to make them do voluntary work so they could keep their visa would be insane imo.
Personally I love chatting to people from other parts of the world, one of the nurses was from central Greece, lovely lass learnt about a part of that country I knew nothing about as I've only ever been to the major sites | |

Imagine if there was already a system of language requirements for immigrants. Did Brexit prevent Britain from using this system?
Does Britain arrange free language and social skills education for working age immigrants and their children? If not, surely that should be implemented and it should be mandatory until the required level is reached.

This is playing to the gallery, as well as rather deceptive.
Language proficiency in all languages is graded from A1 to C2, with C2 being the highest and, in terms of oral fluency, is I imagine met by most native Britons in their early teens.
What is proposed involves increasing from B1 to B2 the language requirement but this is the case only for certain visas.
It does not strike me that someone at B2 level has acquired the level of English expected of someone at A-level standard. |  | | |
