The really frustrating part of last night 10:20 - Oct 22 with 555 viewstheinbetweener

is that we actually looked good, and very much in control that first half. We had plenty of chances to be 3 or 4 up by the break and on another day we convert at least 1 or 2 of them. We played with intent, moved it about efficiently, probably as good as we have done so far all season. We just weren't clinical enough, but defensively we were not under any real pressure.

And then the second half happened...

Yep. I thought it was one of our best 45 minutes of the season. Sustained pressure and territorial dominance. Just no-one willing to take the bull by the horns and break the deadlock.

Too much waiting for something to happen and not enough rolling up of the sleeves and getting it done.

I agree. Felt very confident at half time that we'd go on to win comfortably. Never in a million years did I think we'd lose 3-0. Having said that, they had the two best chances in the first half, the second particularly was a real sitter.

We've had moments in every game this season where we look like an unbelievably good side, but also in every game we give away such soft chances, we're our own worst enemies.

Yes and no.

We played some lovely football, and they barely had a kick, but we only mustered one shot on target. A couple of games aside, we seem to have a huge problem in converting pressure and openings into decent attempts and goals.

I feared the worst at half time, as Charlton were always going to improve, and we leave ourselves wide open to the counter attacking. For all the criticism of Oshea, and he did have a poor game, he was left horribly isolated again and again and all it took was a clearance to put them 1 on 1 with him. This repeats the issues we saw against Middlesbrough.

The balance to our play really isn't right at all at the moment, and we need to fix it fast.

My issue was how much of that first 45 was because that's what town wanted v what charlton allowed us to do...

All that huff and puff and we prob should have gone in at HT 0-2

a niche perspective

Did we have chances though? There was the Akpom shot against the bar, I'd class that as a very good chance. Apart from that?

Don't want to get at players but if a game summed up Jens Cajuste that was it. Pedestrian off the ball despite a couple of early tackles where he was clearly trying to prove a point after Friday, a few of his trademark turns and bursts forward, and then absolutely no end product or meaningful shot at the end of it.

Does he not have the movement ahead of him to enable him to make a pass? Maybe, but if there's no option we need to have a shot, and it doesn't seem to be in his locker.

The absence of any genuine speed in front of him may be a factor. Limits the balls you can play and makes defending simple.

Perhaps I worded it slightly incorrectly. We certainly had "chances to make chances", and some longer range efforts which on another day hit the target at least. I still think we looked fluid and dangerous in possession, and moved the ball quickly into the final third, better than we have done for the most part of this season. We certainly should have capitalised on the heavy pressure - I mean how many corners alone did we have in that first half - must have been at least 10? We're simply nowhere near clinical enough in front of goal, but the passages of play were encouraging at least in that first half.

But then like I say, the second half then happened...

Warning signs were there, they missed a 1 v 1 and an open goal.

flattering to deceive on 11:19 - Oct 22 with 223 viewsEuropa

In my opinion, it’s a case of flattering to deceive. (Caveat: I have to rely on TownTV.) From what I saw against both Middlesboro and Charlton, the side oozes skill compared to the “band of brothers” double promotioners, but (again just my opinion) we try to overcomplicate things and would be better off playing the simpler tactics favoured by these opponents.
I do also wonder if there is some slight infighting or politicking going on both in the changing room and on the pitch, but that may be me just overinterpreting the overcomplicated tactics (“don’t pass to him in that situation, even if it’s the most logical move”).
And yes, I am starting to feel that we really don’t have a plan B and are becoming too predictable.
