| Another modern football moan… 23:08 - Oct 25 with 1128 views | Bigalhunter | I know we’ve had a few threads on this general theme.. My latest one concerns this nonsense whereby the manager/head coach howls, screams, flaps his arms like a manic scarecrow, berates the 4th official for good measure before rushing to huddle around that iPad/laptop thingy on a stand with his entourage….then they all leap up en masse and replicate the whole process again… For some reason, Arne Slot & his mates irritate me the most in this regard. | |

My only concern would be whether the modern day substitute would be able to dress himself, completely unsupervised. Seemed to take Chuba an age to locate the various complicated requirements of shirt, shorts, socks and boots today. It’s like they’re utterly bewildered once the coach gives them the nod to come on, as they sit there wrapped up like grandma on bonfire night. [Post edited 25 Oct 23:23]

I've no idea who's fault that was BTW. Was it the player for not having socks or the kit man I always thought the subs wore the socks to the dugout...

I think even the modern player has some responsibility to make sure he’s got a pair of socks on his feet before he shuffles out to sit on the subs bench and play on his phone. Imagine Sir Bobby turning to Mick Lambert… ‘Right, you’re on son. Looks like Clive’s hobbling.’ ‘Give us a couple of minutes, boss, I can’t work out how to get out of my onesie and I’ve left my shorts in the car..’

Wenger was quite open about this

So do I but it’s modern times I guess, why can’t the manager or coach sit higher up in the stand for a better view ?

Which is why a lot of managers - I think in Europe - tend to watch one half from the stand and one half from the sidelines.

Phil Brown. Fraud of a man, the self belief and swagger of Brendan Rogers, the management ability of Paul Hurst

Phil brown only managed Notlob for five games as a caretaker. The rest of your description is entirely accurate

I used to coach my boy's team from age 7 to 16. I used to get his kit and boots eady for him every night but by the time he was 15 I had assumed he was old enough to do it himself. One day we had an away game and after putting the boys through their warm up the starting eleven lined up on the pitch. My boy unzipped his tracksuit top and was wearing the home shirt instead of the away shirt. Had to change the starting line up and put him in the bench until his mother arrived after 30 minutes with the right top. Players these days at professional clubs have every aspect of their lives looked after from a very young age. From finding a suitable family home to handing in their passports. It will no doubt be somebody elses fault that Chuba didn't have his socks. [Post edited 26 Oct 9:38]
