Techy cloud advice. 20:19 - Nov 2 with 1483 viewsBanksterDebtSlave

Apparently Junior's cloud is full, something to do with 16,000 photos. Apparently my offer of a couple of photos albums doesn't cut it so any advice on a solution that frees up her cloud while maintaining easy access to her pictures and stuff would be appreciated. I'm not even sure what this means but surely some of you techy young folk will understand. Thanks.

I'm not techy but I do know that One Drive, which comes with Microsoft 365, offers 1 terabyte (1000 gigabytes) of storage.

Apparently that's enough for 240,000 photos.

Nah you've got me, is this compatible with an Apple phone thingy?

Edit Miss Slave is on it, so if all the pictures go on the Microsoft cloud thingy then Junior can delete them from the Apple cloud thingy?

This may not make sense to you but Microsoft 365 gives you things like Word and Excel on computers, as well as One Drive.

And this suggests One Drive works on Apple.

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/microsoft-onedrive/id477537958

She would need, however, to be signed up to Microsoft 365, although in the case of my children that has come free as part of their studies in the past.

EDIT: I've just seen you edit, and I think the answer is yes. But best to put them on One Drive first to see it works, before deleting on Apple.

Miss Slave just installed One Drive on her phone and you get 50 somethings of storage for free.

Edit ....are there external storage devices (flash drive?) that can plug in to an iPhone to free up the space that way?

The link I sent says "upgrade to a Microsoft 365 subscription to get up to 1 TB of storage", so if she has such a subscription it should work.

Or maybe you have to download other parts of the package.

https://apps.apple.com/in/app-bundle/microsoft-365/id1450038993?mt=12

To be honest, I don't use One Drive on my phone (only on my computer), so there may be something I am missing but it ought to be seamless with a Microsoft 365 subscription.

How much storage does she have now?

Having apple photos syncing across to Microsoft isn’t the greatest idea and will be cluncky.

Upping her Apple Storage is the simplest option tbh.

That I can't comment on but if that is a problem I would have thought it would be possible to transfer a lot of photos to the One Drive to free up space, and carry on using the Apple storage as at present, with subsequent transfers as and when necessary to free up space.

But I am no expert.

To get 1TB ‘free’ storage, you have to spend around £50 a year on a personal plan and keep paying it or lose that storage.

You get 5gb free on 365.

My point was if someone is going to pay to get Microsoft 365, just pay for more Apple storage. It’s much simpler.

You can also share the Apple plan across family for the same price

That's why I did say "if she has such a subscription". It clearly would be a nonsense to take out a Microsoft 365 subscription just to get more storage on your phone.

EDIT: Your point about a subscription being an ongoing thing is a good one.

For my own part, I use my computer for virtually all tasks, so a Microsoft 365 subscription makes complete sense, especially as it covers other family members.

But I'll butt out now and leave it to the experts.

Buy extra space from apple. Price per month

50GB £0.99
200GB £2.99
2TB £8.99
6TB £26.99
12TB £54.99

200GB should be enough.

2.99 a month for 200gb of extra iCloud. Apparently that should be good for around 50,000 photos.

Either buy a flash drive to transfer the photos over, buy a sub for cloud storage (easiest way), you can have a look at sites like Dropbox - they do have a free account for ex amount of storage, you can just download an app and transfer. Not many options, a flash is more painful
