Willing to share details of some of the things you are invested in currently? (Don't worry, I won't take it as qualified financial advice!)

I've been banging on about gold and silver for 20 years on here. Whether it's still value now I don't know but i'm not selling.

Bitcoin - not willing to get into a debate with any of the usual posters. I didn't understand it. thought it was worthless and would be banned. It's clearly here to stay now. Dropped quite a bit in the last week or so which i'm sure someone will gleefully point out. I don't care. I am looking 15 years into the future not 15 days.

The rest is a big bet on future macro trends and other areas of development:

ARKK - biggest bet

The rest is mainly ETFs based on:

Robotics
Quantum computing
Clean energy
Biotech
Cybersecurity and data
Blockchain technology
Rize's future of food ETF
Global infrustructure
Emerging markets
AI
Genomics
Global semiconductors

Other single companies:

Alphabet
Amazon
Primary Health Properties

Not financial advice. Been bought at different times so not sure if I would buy again right now at current prices. I regularly tweak it.

I highly recommend chat gpt just to analyse your portfolio. Obviously I don't take stock tips from it but I entered my full portfolio and it recommended 2-3 macro megatrends I had missed and recommended some ETFs. I then went off and researched them more. Just to get some ideas though it's very good. Not all equally weighted.

I'm probably a different age , but I work 26 hrs i do 2 days one week 3 the other. . I do enough to run my car , a season ticket and a couple of holidays like Greece and Turkey or similar. I could work more but for me time is much more important than more money.

The fact that you can afford those luxuries, while only working 26 hours, means you are in a very privileged position. Sadly, many people are forced to work long hours and/or multiple jobs, just to pay the bills. Work/life balance is impossible for these people. Who is benefiting from this should be the big question. The fact that full time workers are forced to claim benefits, just to pay the rent, is a scandal.

He didn't comment on anyone else and we have no idea of his life story. He may have worked very hard to get into the position he's in. So while privileged it could well be earnt privilege.

Of course, and I haven't suggested otherwise.

Going by your profile name, we are probably similar aged.

I have been trying to find that 'thing' that helps me slow down. I have run businesses for 30 years and have felt myself getting more tired of late and starting to feel less motivated for the striving of growth etc.

I could potential ease back, but know that I cant just sit at home and watch shite TV, I will need something meaningful to occupy my time. I enjoy work and have always worked, but would like to ease back on the demand on my time and knowledge.

What I have learned is theres not a lot of help and guidance out there on this sort of thing. The default position seems to be play golf, go volunteer or become a child care option for grandchildren (we dont have any at this stage)

In fairness, I have tended to work hard and play hard, so have really enjoyed my work life and been able to do things and go to places that would otherwise have been out of my reach. But that too takes it toll and is not really a suitable (semi) retirement option in my mind.

Some guys in my position have said they will travel etc, and they do, but you soon run out of those places to go to, and you have to balance how much of your pension/savings you use for this.

Dont get me wrong, its a nice problem to have, many dont get the choices, but like you I have worked hard, long hours and gone without some social/family stuff over the years. Sorry it doesnt answer your question, but very much in the same sort of position, so interested on the views in your threads.

Used to struggle with it. Pre children I wasn't as conscious of it, I was younger, fitter, keen to make a good impression and climb the ladder and actually enjoyed what I was doing.

Post children I became way more conscious of it. I travelled a lot and didn't like being away from them, there would be the occasional well meaning remark from one of them when they were little like 'daddy I miss you, stop going away I don't get to see you' that would cut deep. Missed parents evenings, nativity concerts all sorts. I tried to take comfort in remembering it was them I did it for, but made a drastic change to allow myself more time at home and less travel. Took a £15k pay cut once, and that was 10 years ago. Never regretted it. Someone said to me 'in 10 years the only people who will remember you working late are your family'.

Tried to maintain a balance ever since. Its not easy, but its important. For my own physical and mental health as well.

When I reached 60 I sold up my house in NW London and moved to Suffolk. I was in the fortunate position that I could work from home, only going to our office once a fortnight.

I don't need to work as many hours as I no longer have a mortgage to worry about and it means I can more time doing things that I want to do.

If I want to get fish n chips for lunch I drive to Felixstowe or Aldeburgh, I have been to concerts, recitals (never thought that would happen), long lunches, comedy nights and it is also now easier for speedway and footy.

I only wish I hadn't waited so long to make the move

This is great.

I live in north west London and settling down in Suffolk is something I really think i want to do.

I'm 45 and was thinking i'd do it when i got to my 60s but reading those words 'i only wish i hadn't waited so long' is really making me think.

Always worth reminding ourselves of this in a 'count your blessing' sort of way especially if life is getting you down which a few posters here have indicated is the case for them.

If you have a roof over your head, clothes on your back, a car on your driveway, and still have spare change in your pocket, you are better off than a few billion people on earth today, and most of those who have ever lived.

To be fair life has not always been like this divorced relationships gone wrong has cost me a lot of money well in my world. Plus I brought my kids up with help with a previous partner. Sp*nked plenty going on the lash when single..But I got a little lucky and a little sensible. I don't have the home of my dreams but very fortunate I don't have a mortgage but it was done through work and doing shifts like nights and putting a bit in a work pension.

When I was 18 I got a job as Clerical Assistant at Bury St Edmunds DHSS. A few weeks in, my uncle, who I was very fond of, died at his desk leaving a wife and four daughters. He worked every hour he could to provide for them. I swore then that I wouldn't make my job the epicentre of my life and have stuck to it.

I spent 15 years working for the National Trust until 2021 and it drove people crazy. So many people in the organisation simply couldn't understand that I wanted to be at my kids' and wife's life events and wouldn't do overtime unless it was necessary and didn't join the property-wide "Who got in first this morning?" game.

Got made redundant post-Covid, tried a couple of other jobs and went into a spell of post-redundancy depression but now work for myself selling vintage & antiques on Etsy. My wife has a long-term health condition which is degenerative and this is the best life choice I ever made. I earn about a third of what I did before but the bills are paid and we're secure. Yesterday we went to Exeter, wandered through the charity shops looking for new stock, stopped off for coffee and cake a couple of times and generally fannied about, having fun together, savouring every moment while we can and wishing I'd done it years ago. In February we're off to Scotland for a fortnight, something I could never have done when managing a tourist attraction.

Great stuff.

When I worked for Travelex the regional manager strongly implied that because I had no kids and no commitments I should basically work overtime whenever they asked. I always refused.

It's good advice and I always had. Work to live mentality until kids came along. I've reached a point where my job is very stressful and busy and not the right work life balance but a bit trapped by it now. That's probably over the top but as much as family would never put pressure on I feel the pressure not to let them down or effect them in terms of quality of life and security. Im not really in a position to do something completely different and take a big pay cut.

Not sure if anyone feels like this and has made a change and how it went....

Very true words I heard when I was young life is different today never had much and no did many other people no mobile sky tnt pay per view.
My Wembley ticket cup final was £2.50 so if you earned fifty pounds it was a small percentage unlike today, football is no longer a poor man's game.

Which is good advice but sometimes personal circumstances dictate that that person has to work long hours. If you need the money to pay the rent, the mortgage or whatever, work life balance can be a luxury which some cannot afford.
