Due, in part, to a Panorama episode editing/doctoring something Trump said to make him look bad. As if there aren’t literally THOUSANDS of actual real examples of him speaking and behaving like a c**t.

Which begs the question, why bother going to the trouble of editing the speech when, as you say, there are literally THOUSANDS of actual real examples of him speaking and behaving like a c**t?

Less doctored as cut so that two separate parts of Trump's dialogue seemed to be contiguous. Utterly stupid all the same given the inevitable reaction.

It is though, a result of the BBC deciding that rigorous analysis is not welcome in it's News division and removing proper journalism in favour of talking heads 'both-siding' an issue. The vacuousness is summed up by the crap that the News App pushes as breaking news.

And yet, if the right wing get their way and destroy the BBC then what comes next will be even worse.

Having recently downloaded their app, YES! So much unimportant stuff pushed out as breaking news. It’s painful.

Certainly very far from perfect but if/when the BBC goes, scary to think of what will remain and thrive. Fox-lite idiocy, mostly. Darren Grimes in prime time interviewing Nigel and Tommy three times a week.

I would guess the intention wasn't deliberately to make him look bad/worse, but just bringing the damning comments together, as is common in news. While I can see that there is some justification for criticism of clumsy editing, I don't think there's much dispute that the underlying narrative was correct - Trump incited the violence on January 6th.

I am no fan of Trump, but this programme was stitched together to make Trump look far worse than the facts indicate. It's a bit like when the Watergate scandal emerged; shortly after you could buy a tape of Nixon confessing to the crimes. A supposedly impartial national broadcaster should not be making up biased political programmes. The real error was that, when this was discovered, the BBC executives didn't immediately hold their hands up & say "we messed up".

Nixon made the tapes confessing to crimes, he literally bugged himself!

Nick Robinson explains in this the "paralysis" when it came to responding.

edit. I had posted an incorrect abbreviation of the speech. Here is the section I should have posted from where the beeb took the first part.

"We're going to walk down to the Capitol, and we're going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we're probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them.

Because you'll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength and you have to be strong. We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated, lawfully slated.

I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard"

and this is the part they added

"Our brightest days are before us. Our greatest achievements, still away.

I think one of our great achievements will be election security. Because nobody until I came along had any idea how corrupt our elections were.

And again, most people would stand there at 9 o'clock in the evening and say I want to thank you very much, and they go off to some other life. But I said something's wrong here, something is really wrong, can have happened.

And we fight. We fight like hell. And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore.

Our exciting adventures and boldest endeavors have not yet begun. My fellow Americans, for our movement, for our children, and for our beloved country.

And I say this despite all that's happened. The best is yet to come".

The two parts of the speech are completely unrelated. He's not talking about going to the Capitol and Physically fighting.

Here is the full transcript which is mostly the delusional ramblings of a bad loser.

So I don't think it is correct to defend or find any excuse for the people who edited the clip. It was done intentionally to mislead.

They need to be transparent and should have made it clear there was a time gap between the excerpts, but it doesn’t misrepresent Trump’s behaviour so it isn’t biased. It was just stupid and now we tax payers will effectively be giving Trump a big handout.

That's actually not what he said, see below, that's also a contracted version. I don't think anyone is defending anything "because it's Trump" and it is a clumsy and unnecessary edit, given that the same message could have been conveyed without it. But the matter, which received no comment at the time, has clearly been whipped up as a stick to beat the BBC by those with agendas against it, including those appointed to roles within it.

Indeed, in a similar circumstance in written text you'd probably separate the two pieces by ending the quote and starting a new paragraph with, 'He added:'. There should have been a fade at the cut.

Of course the narrative was correct. All the more reason not to do what the BBC did. Why do it? It was plain wrong and taxpayers money was used to generate that wrong.

It’s now possible that because of epic stupidity and incompetence yours and my licence fee may be paying compo to Trump. You couldn’t make it up.

And that’s before the idiots making the story about them when it should be about what the orange shtgibbon did..

I would guess whoever edited it was cutting to the chase, drawing out the damning comments from the hour-plus speech, which in itself is standard stuff, albeit in this instance giving the impression the two parts of the speech were one passage has led to the furore.

the analysis of bias came from someone the bbc had appointed as an external consultant to independently assess its impartiality. when he produced a critical report back in the summer the dg and execs ignored it. i don't think the people who point to the seriousness of these issues as identified by an external independent reviewer can really be labelled whipping up as a stick to beat the BBC by those with agendas against it. if all criticism of the bbc is dismissed in that way it becomes an unaccountable closed bubble. dismissing this sort of thing and not taking them seriously jeopardises the bbc's future.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Was he in role when he sent the letterr? On bbc website it says Michael Prescott, a former external advisor to the BBC's Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee (EGSC)..
And if you think Boris Johnson is someone acting with good intentions and integrity on this or any matter then you are mistaken . Same for the telegraph, the mail and kemi

yes he was in post when he wrote it. he wrote it when his previous advice had been ignored. he then resigned after nothing had happened. that's the sequence of events reported today. regardless of who says a lack of impartiality is bad, a lack of impartiality is still bad.

edit: and this is an interesting read from someone who is anything but an enemy of the bbc.

Prescott's independence in the matter, given who was responsible for appointing him, has also been questioned.

I think it's naive to believe that Trump's speech wasn't to some degree a call to arms, so to speak. Indeed, I think a lot of those who ended up in court charged with offences relating to January 6th said they took it as that. I presume the intention of the ill-judged edit was to give a snapshot of the overall intention of the speech.

According to BoJo the Clown, it was a 4 person committee of which his appointee Robbie Gibbs was a member. Not sure on the others, but the Guardian story is leading it as Gibbs leading the charge both on appointing Prescott, but also influencing what he investigated.

there's an awful lot of "the guardian has been told" in that article. people linked to the bbc wanting to promote a particular version of events and using the guardian to do so without being named or quoted or providing evidence. attacking the people involved rather than dealing with the demonstrated lack of impartiality. not sure its a great way for an institution to respond.

as you say, prescott was appointed by a 4 person committee - i don't think any evidence has been offered yet for the four being conspirators.
