| Have we done any Ashes talk? on 13:39 - Nov 15 with 414 views | chicoazul | Half the Aussie attack are crocks and their batting is frail. This is our best chance at winning over there for ages, probably better on balance than 2010 when they still had a few greats. I fancy them to win at least one test if Cummins and Hazlewood can be fit but we will win at least two. | |

Do we have an effective bowling attack fit and available?

| Have we done any Ashes talk? on 13:28 - Nov 15 by Sharkey | I remember Ken McEwan playing for W.Australia. Arguably the greatest player never to play a Test, so he had a long year to fill. |
What a fine player Ken was. A great Essex side that. The perfect (local) team for me in the absence of Suffolk having a pro team to grow up with. Gooch, Hardie, McEwan, Fletcher, Philip, Turner, Lever, Pringle, Foster, East etc.

Hopefully but if the entire team is over 30, in the next few years Australia are going to be rubbish when they all retire.

I thought the same in 2005 when Ponting, Langer, Hayden, Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist etc were into their 30's. The next gen were pretty good though.

Took awhile for them come good again though, as we beat them in 2009, 2011 and 2013.

That Aussie side we beat in 2010-11 was utterly dreadful. Really not sure what to expect this series tbh. Got a feeling that in terms of overall quality, it may be quite underwhelming mixed in with the usual frenetic drama you always get with Aus v England. One thing I really want to see though is a Root hundred to shut some people up.

Remains to be seen whether this is the last push from a very good Aussie attack or it’s a summer too far for them. The resilience of our attack is totally unproven compared with theirs.

When you get a golden generation you tend to get a vacuum when they all retire if no younger players have had a chance. I would expect Australia are still strong enough to win this series at home, but with the whole team being above 30, they will be left with a completely inexperienced side in five years time.

This isn’t a golden generation though like the team we beat in 05. They’re good but they’re not in the same category.

| Have we done any Ashes talk? on 19:42 - Nov 14 by mellowblue | I hope he gets his ton. Otherwise it will always be held against him when working out order of merit for the top batsmen (I refuse to say batter when the context is men). He will be 38 at the next Ashes and possibly past his best, so he has to make it count during this series. |
Do you rate Root as an All Roundsman? Or is he not good enough as a Bowlsman for that title? He is a decent Fieldsman, especially in the slips where he has proven to be one of England's most dependable catchmen.

I love an Ashes Christmas, lovely day with all the family etc but them leaving & you sitting down on the sofa munching on leftover whilst watching the cricket is always the highlight for me. |

Well they are better than anyone under 30, so if not golden, the point is that the next lot are not going to be anywhere near the same level.

Fingers crossed. Big plus for England hazelwood not making it. These old men do seem to be creaking a bit.

very true, I re-checked as I doubted myself a bit. I had forgotten we had dominated them in the 2010/11 series in Oz. As well as at home of course.

They did beat us 5-0, in the series after 05 I think.

Ha ha, very good. I get the logic, but when you have been calling them batsmen for 50 years or so, it is what I know them as. Too old to change now,

There really should be no issue with calling male batsmen batsmen anyway. I think Aussies always did tend to call them batters.

it will be a generational thing and will be become the norm as dinosaurs like me die off, but it is a bit too Aussie slang for me. Have nightwatchmen become nightwatchpersons yet ? Or nightwatchers

very disappointing series that one. Harmison's first ball was wild and went for 4 byes and it somehow set the tone. Last hurrah for the great Aussie side.
