When do we reckon he might be back in the squad? Good to hear that he got minutes in a behind closed doors game during the international break. I appreciate we have to be patient with him but I can't wait to see him back!

Nope. He's coming straight back into the side and will smash the Championship like he did last time.

Absolutely no chance he's loaned out.

I can see him getting a chance given how McAteer has started.

Obviously not privvy to what kind of condition he is in but you can't help but feel that he would add something down our right hand side. Hopefully we learn from the Ogbene situation.

I'm just going to observe that Wes was at his best when Chappers was playing, the two worked so well together.

It is difficult to see him coming back as the player he once was. Given his contract situation I can see him being moved on to bring someone else in

Contrary to what many on here seem to think, Ogbene is not ripping up trees at Sheff Utd. Admittedly neither is McAteer

Hopefully Wes can come back and show them both how it's done

If players can only play well when they're alongside specific other players then we're a bit b*ggered!

I'm not saying that Wes can't. But my observation is around the fact that KM got a lot out of that first group of players, who all pretty much played beyond the levels they had ever played at before and part of that is to do with who was playing with who.

Chappers and Wes, for me, had a real connection on the pitch (and to a degree Harry as well, as noted). So, expecting Wes to come in and play the way he did, at least initially, without those people around him, is likely a bit too much.

That's not to say he won't be able to perform again (though it's a really big injury to come back from).

The types of injury both Ogbene and Burns suffered affect one of their biggest attributes, pace.

Apols, I was being deliberately facetious. Just a bit tired of the harking back for players that are no longer here, or in Clarke's case were always considered someone we'd need to upgrade if we want to carry on our upwards trajectory

Chaplin, not smashing it at Pompey. Ogbene, not particularly fancied by Sheff Utd fans. Harry Clarke didn't come out of his last loan looking particularly great either.

Let's move forward with the players at our disposal rather than look back with rose tinted specs at what once was

That's where it's at a huge injury at that stage in your career very sad for him,
Have my fingers crossed he still has a place here come the end of January,

Wes had his birthday two days ago. What a guy.

I can't wait either, but also I have my doubts sadly on his prospects here. Gut tells me he'll be 3rd choice and then his contract expires in the summer.

Would we release him into space regularly if he did start? We seem to have a preference for playing to feet or behind the player when it comes to our RW slot.

No need for apologies.

Oddly - that was where my post was kind of coming from. Love Wes - been a fabulous player for us.

Is he going to oust the players in that position we have spent big on. He could, absolutely, but I think the bigger picture suggests unlikely (rightly or wrongly).

As you say, we look forward not back.

That aside, I would say that Chappers is the one player I think we rue letting go. For whatever reason - he was the one in that 10 role that played it well, and I think he would have done this season (albeit his Pompey form isn't great but then, the environment, teammates etc are all different as well).

Just seen Glassers suggesting Furlong is no better than Janoi Donacien on another thread. I think this is the thing we really need to move away from!

To be fair to Wes, he was one of the League One boys that didn't look out of place in the PL, but on the whole, I agree, this injury at his age is a nasty one to get, hopefully he can get back to his previous best, but the jury is out until we see him.

Early on this season I noticed Egeli was hitting a few of those Chappers-esque round-the-corner balls in behind the full back for [not sure who - Hirst, Szmodics?] to run on to.

Not convinced that that pattern of play will work particularly well or rather particularly often for us as it's more of a counter attacking ploy, but maybe it still could do. Perhaps if Burns is back and Egeli is playing the central 10 role we might see some very similar interplay. I know it's very early days but I think I can see a lot of intelligence and quick learning in the way Egeli plays. Think we're in for some serious footy from him as this season goes on.
