Before last night, we had only beaten teams in the lower half of the division (currently 16th or lower) so beating Hull was a step forward in that respect.
If we are going to get automatic promotion, we are going to need to beat more of the teams in and around us in the top half of the table like Stoke and Boro. |  |

Agree it's a good milestone.
However, as has been pointed out a few times recently, other teams that we've beaten already were much higher in the table previously (including WBA 2nd at one point AFAIR). The table is dynamic as the season progresses, and this metric of 'beating teams near the top of the table' only becomes relevant after several more months into the campaign, when the table truly begins to take shape.
IMO this is even more relevant this year, with the points between 2nd and 17th being so close (just a 3 game swing) |  | | |

The last time we went up we lost both home and away against Leeds, drew both games against Leicester, beat Southampton home and away, Lost and drew against WBA and lost and drew against Norwich.

Of the teams currently above us, we haven't yet played Coventry and Stoke and have lost at Boro.
Of the teams in the play off places below us, we lost at Preston and got a point at Bristol City.
The rest of the top half of the table sees: Derby (H D), Hull (A W), Millwall yet to play, Brum (A D), Soton (H D), Watford (H D).
It would probably have been good to get a win from at least one of those home games (Derby, Soton and Watford).
We have lost to Preston and Boro and beaten Hull all away. That's an average of a point away from home to the top half sides. At home we have 3 points from 3 matches against top half sides and could do with improving on that slightly.
EDIT: It also means that against bottom half teams we have: Home W4 D1 L1 and Away W2 D0 L0. If we can keep up that form against bottom half sides (2.17 ppg at home and 3 ppg away) we will be doing very well. Consistently beating the sides we should (based on position in the table) be beating is what got us promoted last time. [Post edited 26 Nov 20:38]

I mean that we had a poor record against our rivals but it didn’t hurt our promotion chances. We were ruthless against the lower teams whereas Leeds and co slipped up in games they were expected to win. QPR away being the example.
We also finished runners up to Villa in 1981 despite beating them home and away. These top of the table clashes aren’t the promotion deciders people think they are. It’s getting points against teams like Oxford on a wet windy night

Being able to beat Cov in both games, in itself, might not mean we catch them, but it may knock their "invincibility cloak" off, and cause a bit of a wobble. They just seem to be able to find a way to win almost every game, so far. From our point of view, they could do with something to really test their mettle. |  | | |

There's so much variation in the league that I think this point is less relevant at the minute than some seasons. We could have ended up anywhere from 4th to 17th dependent on the midweek games. Pretty sure QPR and West Brom at least were top half when we played them. | |

The table is just too congested at this moment to make sense of stats like these, really. A lot of a negative response to drawing with Wrexham, who I think most perceived to be lower down the league. The reality is after last night it's four clean sheets in a row, they're only a couple of points behind us and they beat Coventry recently, the only team who has been consistent. |  |
