Our goal last night .... 10:34 - Dec 3 with 1956 viewsSomethingBlue

Was ironically – given the rest of the evening's work – the kind we have struggled to score all season. Really sharp, calm, quick decisions taken in a crowded box by Cajuste, Philogene and Clarke before a supreme finish by Walle Egeli when others would have swiped at it. The only episode all night when our quality came to the fore and we were able to make it count: now needs to happen much more.

I thought Nunez in the quarterback role really added something. It might not work for 90 minutes but his ability to see and deliver a pass to quickly open things up provides a different option.

That’s the role he played at Norwich, ball-playing between the centre halves, a bit like Louza can.

Hirst is still here…

Indeed, without many of those around him however particularly Chappers, he looks a shadow of the player he was.

Never mind the fact it was a corner to them in the first place but the ref gave it our way.

I don’t have any sympathy with Blackburn on that. If you take the ball to the corner with the sole objective of stopping your opponents from playing it’s always likely to become a bit of a free for all and working out who got the final touch in real-time is a bit of a lottery

I wouldn't be adverse to playing three in midfield at the expense of our number 10.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Whilst I totally agree with you, he’s not even doing the basics right, and that’s what frustrates me the most. I think his first 3 touches last night consisted of playing a pass out of play and twice the ball going in to him which just bounced off him and gave the ball back to Blackburn.

Look I love Hirst, thought he was terrific in League 1 and Championship last time around. We didn’t value him for his goals, we valued him for his all round play. His selfless running the channels, getting his body in front of people, laying it off to Burns, Chaplin and Broadhead to do their thing and on the more than odd occasion spinning off for one of them to find him and score. Fantastic.

This season he’s been pony, for the want of a nicer word. We’re clearly not a functioning team, but do the basics properly. Get us up the pitch, hold on to it, win fouls. Azon and Akpom in the brief time he’s played up there haven’t been any better, but Hirst hasn’t covered himself in glory. The thing that grinds me the most is that we see it time and time again down PR where teams sit in and hit their striker, who wins a foul against our centre halves just to get up the pitch and alleviate pressure. Hirst does this ridiculous thing where he almost pretends to jump, or pretends to put his body in a position where it looks like he’s trying to win the ball when he’s actually not arsed. Be better, help the team, do the basics.

It would make a lot of sense, especially as we don't seem to be able to find a 10 from the squad.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
