What would you do for 3rd ashes test? 13:51 - Dec 13 with 1536 viewsitfc1108

Obviously have to pick from players we have out there, which is very limiting. It's outrageous that players like Ben Foakes and Jack Leach have been discarded, and to an extent a player like Sam Cook, who would have done what Neser did in the last test. There are so many players who deserve to be dropped, but that's probably a topic, for another day.
For this test, I would drop Smith. Very poor at the moment with the bat and behind the stumps, and offers virtually no encouragement or noise to bowlers or captain. I grew up on hearing Alec Stewart and Jack Russell chipping away all game.
I would give the gloves to Pope and move him down the order to ease pressure on him. He seems too jittery to be a number 3.
Bethell in at 3.
Tounge and Potts in for Carse and Atkinson to pitch it up, and stop obsession of the constant short pitched bowling.
I would keep Jacks for his batting and off spin (and fielding!),
My last choice would be between Archer, and Bashir, depending on the pitch, but would lean towards Archer, with Bashir's poor form, and that Root land Bethell can turn their arms over.

Putting all that First Class Cricket doesn't seem to pay

They used Kookaburra balls in a phase of it last year, perhaps ironically, barely any of the England side would have used them because they are tied up with England

Jacks is probably one who will have actually played with it I guess?

Jacks played one single Red Ball game for Surrey last season. It's not as if he's being doing the business in the Champo, it's a pure vibes pick like Bashir who doesn't even have a County contract for next season.

There are decent spinners, Rehan Ahmed had a breakout season with bat and ball. His brother Farhan is a top bowler as well, Dawson has been messed about for years. Even the likes of Matt Critchley of Essex as a genuine spinning all-rounder who got 3 big tons last season.

Jacks was picked for the Ashes on the basis that he's played 50 white ball games for England so they know what he's capable of. Whether he would be a better cricketer if he played more red ball cricket is a valid point. Same applies to the much younger Bethell & Bashir, who has played 35 First Class games (bowling average 50+)but 19 Tests. Obviously the crowded fixture list is partly responsible for this, but good luck with getting that changed!

I saw a clip from some Aussie cricket podcast where they were talking about the decision to go ahead with the week in Noosa after the first two tests, apparently McCullum said it was planned a year ago and given the planning that had gone into the tour they didn't want to change plans at the last minute and make a knee jerk decision based on the first two tests.

They then went on to say that a journalist they interviewed said he was told by Dale Steyn that he had been approached by England to be the bowling coach with the team for the Ashes series 6 weeks before the first test, but had to turn it down due to other commitments. Perhaps a decision around who would be the teams bowling coach should have been planned further ahead than where they were going to holiday between the 2nd and 3rd test? It all just feels a bit shambolic.

Agreed some of the squad selections were baffling, but we have to deal with the players we have out there now.
Dropping Smith is an interesting idea - he's had a shocking first 2 games & poor batting & keeping seem to have fed on each other. However, I see little reason to think Bethell is the answer as because of England's bonkers selection policy, he's played so little cricket this year.
Jacks offers something with the bat & is a decent fielder. I still think Bashir is nowhere near Test standard as a bowler. His bowling average is 39 after 19 Tests, he is a rabbit with the bat & England's worst fielder.
Adelaide is a less bouncy pitch so Potts and/or Tongue for Atkinson/Carse might make sense. Would also help if the England tail showed some aptitude for staying at the wicket, rather than lamely giving their wickets away.

Now come on. Be fair. Bashir is the 3rd best Somerset spinner after Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan.

I didn't appreciate Jacks had played such little red ball cricket before

He's played 58 first class games in total, at the age of 27 and 3 test matches!

Jamie Smith in comparison has played more and he is fairly new on the scene.

They're a good side historically but neither Doggett or Nesser are world beaters, I'm concerned we have missed our chance now

1 - Give Pope the gloves and slot him in at seven, drop Smith, as I haven't been very impressed with how he handles pressure since the last test against India.
2 - Bethell in at three.
3 - Tongue and Potts in for muck spreader Carse and a not fit enough Atkinson.
4 - Stick with Jacks, as he has already out bowled Bashir this year.
5 - I think Stokes will stand down after the series.
6 - Then after the Ashes, sack McCullum and Key, and replace with Jonathan Trott and Stewart.

Bethell talented as he is, probably isn't the answer

Rew is the other keeping option I would guess and will go on to be a top player for England, it might be a bit too early for him but he has been getting runs for the Lions

Rew senior was singled out and told he was too fat by the Lions management, Flintoff is a great bloke, but I don't like people who aren't qualified coaching the next generation.

Somerset pointed out, he is the fittest member on their current playing staff.

Swann is another one, I couldn't believe my ears when I watched him overseeing the next England opener facing some spin bowlers.

It looks like McCullum is doubling down with no changes to the top seven.
It must be quite demoralising being a batsmen, not in the squad on the outside, and with aspirations of playing for England.
I think in this regime, you will only get noticed it you score 200 of 50 balls in a county or one day game, or something ridiculous like that.
And then you'll probably just be carrying the drinks!

The current crop of younger players like Bethell have been told by the current coaching team, they are not going to play County Cricket as they will pick up too many bad habits!

That's why he has rarely played for Warwickshire, they think he will learn more with their coaching.

Even if it probably isn't the case, they look like like they want the game to be over quickly, either winning or losing, so they can play golf.
That's what it looks like from the outside.
It looks like our batsmen see it as a weakness to dig in and play defensive or leave a ball. There is no respect to the opposition at all.
I'm on the fence with Stokes, but I hope McCullum and Key leave after the series, and we start again, AGAIN!

Langer asked McCullum why aren't you leaving the ball more to get it soft? McCullum said his boys hit the ball so hard, that's the way we like to get it soft.

I don’t think Keys can be blamed for Mccullum actions but he needs to let him go when ashes closes. Stokes is a good captain. But he needs a coach who isn’t like him to help out.

Key is a yes man, best mates and golf partner with Crawley's dad.

Hand picked by the ECB Snake Oil Salesmen, the best bloke for the job is Alec Stewart.

Stokes is the best tactician since Nasser Hussain, but I think he will stand down and then we will have Brook who hasn't got any batting common sense.

That says a lot about what they think of the county game

I think it is hard to judge how McCullum has done up to this series, I mean we have won a lot more tests than in the couple of years prior to him taking over, while playing entertaining cricket, but we have also lost quite a lot of games we should have won. This series so far is a car crash, and people need to be held accountable if it continues this way (as unfortunately I suspect it will).

I also don't know how talented this current crop of players are, we are told how talented they are by the media all the time, but other than Root, Stokes, and possibly Brook I am not sure you can say there are any top class test players in the team at the moment, there are a lot of batters who can score runs on flat tracks, but the ability to play a test innings is more than just being able to hit the ball cleanly. The bowling is decent, if Archer stays fit and bowls as he can then he could be a world class test bowler, but isn't one yet. Also not having a spinner is a huge problem in test cricket.

We certainly haven't beaten anyone decent yet in a series, that's always going be the stick they beat them with

It's South Africa next so it doesn't get any easier
