That was a fantastic end of season performance and the atmosphere was euphoric at yhe end... really believed we were going to tear the 1st division a new one the next year.... it also proved just how much better that West Ham we were and if they didn't have a certain ref as a double assister in the semi final we would have strolled that Cup Final ......Bacon and Eggs on the scoresheet too.
The Beat was playing at fullback for England. The ball was hoofed forward down the left, a player raced down the wing and the commentator said "Who is this ? It's Beattie ! What is he doing there ?"

For some reason I remember that game so vividly, probably for the reason you mentioned, that farcical semi final and replay against West Ham a month or so earlier.
Everyone was rightly furious about Clive Thomas in the replay but I still remember Bobby Gould spending the first twenty minutes of the first game systematically trying to crock Beattie and Hunter.
Which one bit the dust…..dee or dum?….(What’s App group, Nov ‘25)
I was only telling my other half yesterday about how Sir Bobby met him off the train, even putting him up whilst digs were sorted. Love that story. Sir Bob, what a man, The Beat, what a player.

We were definitely up for it that day, with a big point to prove after the cup unfairness.
