'Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are considered illegal under international law.

Saudi Arabia condemned the move. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said Israel's "relentless" settlement expansion fuels tensions, restricts Palestinian access to land, and threatens the viability of a sovereign Palestinian state.'

Zero interest in any kind of peaceful negotiated solution. "We've got the big toys, fk you."

And this is why the prospects of any loong term peace are remote.

And at least some of the reason there are so many Hamas members, and awful attacks happened.

It's horrible but they are protected by the biggest bully in the playground so would be mad not to do things like this if that is their aim (which it obviously is - i'm not condoning it or supporting it). Especially when the rest of the world will also look the other way because they don't want to upset Trump.

The world is the Springfield Elementary playground and the US is Nelson.

There are other reasons. But it is a big one.

If you want to drive people into the hands of extremists, you bulldoze their homes, shoot at their family and leave them with nothing but anger and injustice...

I would like to see your working on that one. I know there have been governments threatening to take us out of the ECHR but surely the UK has recognised international law for a long time.

"the UK has recognised international law for a long time."

I suppose that depends on your definition of "a long time"

Windrush deportations
Internment and breaches of rules of engagement during the troubles.
The Iraq "war"
Military equipment sales to Israel
Arrest of peaceful protestors

I'm sure there are many others

Israel pre 1967 borders or negotiated land swap for some of the settlements similar to the deal put forward by Olmert in 2008.

Nowhere near 1million republicans in Belfast. Just 350,000. And the ROI has plenty of space to home them if they no longer wanted to live in the United Kingdom.

Is pre-67 Israel large enough to have a population increase of 10%? I'd suggest it would be unworkable, and even if it were, the Palestinian statelet that emerged alongside it would be completely unviable.

It's easy to blame Smotrich but he is merely playing bad cop to Netanyahu's good cop given that all members of the Israeli cabinet approved the proposal and Netanyahu has said on numerous occasions there will not be a Palestinian state.

And if you look at the timeline of settlements there is precious little evidence of any real desire on the part of Israel to halt, let alone reverse, the direction of travel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_settlement_timeline

I am no expert but it seems to me that four things have driven Israeli settlements over the years.

1. A lack of land in Israel itself for a growing Jewish population. Israel has the highest birth rate in the OECD, and has also had many immigrants from places like Russia.

2. A historical/religious claim over the land.

3. What Israel regards as its own security.

4. A desire to prevent a viable Palestinian state.

Yes, there is huge amounts of empty space in the southern part of the country. However, it would be nowhere near 10%; The settler population is around 750,000 and a large number of them live in settlements that are just over the border and would likely be part of a landswap (e.g. Beitar Illit and Modi'in Illit, which account for around 160,000 settlers alone).

The Palestinian state is larger that many other 'viable' independent countries, several of which are island states with non-contiguous land areas. However, it may be preferable (or at least more logical) for it to merge with Jordan, especially given more than half of the population of Jordan is Palestinian (and the monarchy itself is a Hashemite/Palestinian mix).

There will never ever be a two state solution. It was unfeasible on the pre 67 borders before the settlements, and now they're established there is no chance. Taking away any moral arguments, why on earth would Israel agree to the formation of a potentially hostile state on its borders?

It was ironic but indicative of the fact that Netanyahu's views are, in my view, the same as Smotrich and Ben Gvir's and he is more than happy for them to divert some of the blame away from him.

That has always been the intention. If you look at the map of settlements, it is all about narrow corridors of land that have fractured the west bank into many smaller parts which makes any possible resistance very localized affairs, easily policed. I expect the new settlements will be along the same lines.

Interestingly, Israeli leaders in 1967 ruled out the possibility of incorporating the West Bank Palestinian population into a greater Israel because it would have dramatically changed the state's Jewish demographic orientation.

That rationale appears to have been a major driving force behind the approach in relation to the occupied territories ever since.
