According to the Icelandic coastguard, it is not carrying oil. If that is the case, I am sure Trump will say it is full of oil and trumpet it as a great triumph.
The absence of oil may be a reason why Putin isn't particularly interested, as is the fact that only in last few weeks did it become Russian registered. And I wouldn't be surprised if Trump and Putin have been in contact about this.

The coast guard said it is not carrying any oil cargo.
A spokesperson for the coast guard told MBL.is:

It's clearly not empty.
The US don't spend the resources to position assets to grab a tanker that's empty, old and far from the US and the Russians don't suddenly change the registration to Russian and have it fly a Russian flag if it's empty.
Rumours are it's been boarded, quite a step given its now a Russian registered vessel.

I did think it curious why the US allowed the ship to escape the Caribbean after a failed attempt to board it.
Maybe it just suited their purposes for it to be boarded where it now is.

I think whether the tanker is full or empty is irrelevant.
This is all about Trump strutting power to the worldand to his Maga base.
Similarly i very much doubt he is serious about invading Greenland. Just as his tariffs were largely abandoned. Threaten to sue for 100 billion and settle for 5mill is his playbook. |  | | |

That was covered in one of the videos on the YT channel I linked to earlier. Clearly the US had enough military assets in the Caribbean to intercept the tanker when it left Venezuela.
However, one of the US military people has said that they'd been waiting for two weeks for the right combination of circumstances to make the Maduro seizure/kidnapping/arrest possible, basically the weather and reliable intelligence about where he was. During that time they couldn't really afford for a few ships, helicopters and personnel to be involved in capturing a tanker. | | | |
