If only Premier League support was half as good as the atmosphere in Frankfurt tonight.

Oscar Hojilund (brother of Rasmus) is a midfielder I thought we may have been able to target for a loan. Tough tackling, excellent engine.

He's starting tonight though so may be very much more in their current plans than I thought.

German club ownership (50% +1) by fans sees safe standing and atmosphere prioritised over opportunities for corporate types to eat prawn sandwiches.

Football in England has been sanitised in the name of progress and safety. And it's not going to change anytime soon.

FYI a season ticket at most German clubs is less than 1 match in hospitality at Portman Rd.

Clear which clubs prioritise fans and it's not the ones owned by pension funds or investment firms.

What impresses me the most are the dirt cheap season tickets for the ultras sections (€150 for Bayern, if my research is correct).

It's almost as if the clubs realise the value of committed Ultras support, and choose to work with and encourage them. Rather than paying lip service, and throwing up every possible hurdle.

Well they have passionate local fans and people bringing beer to their seat. Meanwhile the London stadiums are filled with tourists, corporates and people quietly tutting.

I imagine that there are a good number of tourists in the Bundesliga as well.

The difference is that every stadium has a 'Kurve' full of hardcore fans, paying a pittance for their season ticket, who know that the trade-off for their cheap ticket is the expectation that they provide 90mins of unconditional vocal support.

With respect, though, games like that are very much outliers.

Bundesliga games are full-on atmosphere for 90mins, whether it's a 4-3 thriller, or a 0-0 bore draw.

And its not just the bundisliga. Italy, Holland and much of scandinavia have amazing atmospheres. Attending football matches on the continent is very much a cultural thing - 90% + of the crowd being made up of adult males.
I attended the Europa league final 2023 in Dublin and on my seat was a massive Leverkusen flag that I was expected to wave for the entire game.

I went to a Dusseldorf game a couple of years ago with around 180 other Town fans, it was an amazing experience, brilliant atmosphere and had a fantastic time in the old town pre-match. (Cheers Nathan) And somehow we survived the most dangerous part, we drank a beer or two while watching the game! The Altbier over there is lovely.

You go across Europe and the atmospheres generated are truly phenomenal, it’s engrained culturally, the passion and noise created from the stands, it’s just different.

We love our football in this country, it’s as much a part of our culture as anywhere in the world, it’s just a different type of culture, different atmospheres, different experiences.

All part of the wonderful global game.

In Sweden ( and probably many other places) where the ‘ultras’ are half the show , the ultras also know how to go ‘on strike’ by simply showing up and standing in silence, to protest about e.g. tv late changes to kick-off times, heavy-handed policing . Hopefully soon they will direct their ire towards ‘game management’ from their own players.

When football fans rave about atmosphere in premier league or championship, I always think they should watch the bundesliga
