I saw the same number reported on BBC - you can guarantee it’s a lot higher than the official figures. Disgusting but unfortunately not unprecedented there.

Whilst I think we all agree military intervention will just make things worse, a quick lip service condemnation of Iran followed by a much longer rant about something the US hasn’t even done is pretty poor form. I’ve seen about 8 or 9 attempts at toppling this regime in my lifetime… I really hope and believe this time it might happen. In the past it was just mainly students,women,ethnic groups but this time it’s the middle class and Middle Aged which are very encouraging signs to possible success.
To see Venezuela and Iran free and both their beautiful and intelligent citizens allowed to thrive once again would be a gift to the world as well as their own. |  |

Trump's rhetoric isn't at all helpful as it gives the Mullahs an excuse to say that this isn't the Iranian people rising up but something organised by the USA. You can understand some people in a country where the internet has been cut off falling for that line but the progressive voices in this country should avoid bringing in their prejudices and support the brave Iranian people.

But the Iranian people started the uprising, and they know why they are protesting, a financial crisis caused by the regime causing huge prices rises on food etc, as well as their history of brutality and oppression. The Iranians are seriously depleted financially after their attacks on Israel which cost them an estimated $4bn plus (and proved pretty ineffective), and sunk their currency to a record low (it’s since fallen even further hence the severe inflation on imports). This was part of the catalyst for the protests as the Iranian people have seen their money wasted on military endeavours and funding of ineffective proxies.
The US doesn’t have any boots on the ground in Venezuela don’t forget, it doesn’t amount to much more than a raid on Maduro and blockade of their seas. Not condoning their actions but it’s not correct to call it an invasion as I’ve seen it elsewhere, I would not be at all surprised if they lose interest and the status quo reverts there given most of the regime remains.
