| How to approach caravanists and camper w@nkers? 05:56 - Jan 19 with 3609 views | bluelagos | Sat in a long line of car drivers stuck behind a caravan for 15 mins earlier doing at least 20 under the limit. Lovely twisties too. When the caravanist eventually pulled over I didn't know whether to give him a thumbs up or some free advice on how to shake coffee beans. Thoughts from the Twtd hive? | |

Fair amount of littering is due to them as well. Tax them to the hilt. [Post edited 19 Jan 6:13]

As someone who has a campervan and I can only speak for me and my friends, that post is just lazy nonsense. We travelled to Ulverston last year, then to the Tan Hill Inn, Hexham and then to Knockengorrach music festival (stopping over in Castle Douglas the night before) spending a fair chunk of money in all of those places. Stocking up on food and drink tended to be from supermarkets in the towns, but we stopped to eat at smaller places, including a village tea room on the way to Hexham and had dinner and breakfast at a pub near to Castle Douglas the night before the festival and at another cafe close by on our way home. We never leave any rubbish behind disposing of it in bins on the campsite in Hexham and at the festival. There will always be vvankers who leave litter, but you’ll find that anywhere, people throwing rubbish out of cars. There is a lack of bins generally in places such as laybys which exacerbates the litter problem. You can’t travel for a couple of weeks without spending money in the places you visit, even if you are eating and drinking exclusively in your van which most people don’t do in my experience.

How dare you call my post lazy nonsense. You don't have to suffer damnable stupidity every time you drive out. Think before you post. Think before you travel. That is all.

I often develop a reciprocal murderous hatred of a handful of flabby, selfish, arrogant car drivers every time I ride. My hatred comes from direct threats to my life rather than a small delay to my oh-so-important itinerary though. It soon passes though, so long as I have survived, or they haven't had to stop at a junction sooner than they hoped.

Thanks for trying to de-escalate. I shouldn't brand all camper vans with the blame for bad behaviour but when you suffer as the residents of the Highlands do from overtourism destroying the very things the tourists claim to have come to see it can be stressful. Believe it or not my posts are quite mild compared to the views of many. The silver lining is that both native Scots and incomers are united by a common enemy...

In the hierarchy of users, cyclists are near the peak, just behind Alfa drivers. Def info.

I am guessing that you are on a single lane country road, and travelling above 10pmh, therefore the limit will be one of 40mph, 50mph or 60mph - 70mph would be a dual carriage way. The distance slowed over 15 mins will be constant across all speeds at 5 miles, therefore to make up that distance it would take approximately 7.5 minutes at 40mph, 6 minutes at 50mph, or 5 minutes at 60mph to make up the lost 5 miles by driving at the speed limit. The delay is at worst 7.5 mins . . .

Yep. I took a camper van around the NC500 a couple of years ago. Used the local supermarkets in the towns we were visiting. Used the local pubs in the evening. Bought Gin and Whisky from local distilleries. And always disposed of litter in the correct manner.

So you want tourism to provide jobs and to keep services going, but don’t want pesky tourists. How’s does that work in reality? If there was no tourism many communities in places like Skye would slowly decline. I suggest that you think before you post too. My post was detailed and considered, but hey ban caravans, camper vans and motorhomes and see how that works out for your community and others in remote locations across the UK. Yes - I would tahnk him - he is under no obligation to pull over, it is a gesture of kindness where he is acknowledging he is probably slowing people down and has tried to help.

Their turn today, it will be yours another time. Purely by chance you happened to be behind them, rather than ahead on the open road. That same phrase probably also explains why Mr Caravan was going quite slowly, twisty roads are best handled with care when towing.

They could encourage motorcyclists. Pay for hotels, always use restaurants and don't hold anyone up. What's not too like? Cyclists too, although bit of an effort to get there :-) As a slight tangent, the irony of the much marketed NC500 as a beautiful drive, when in reality you're simply sitting behind a line of slow moving campers is quite something. They do. Going back to my NC500 trip, there was a big mix of cyclists (usually with a van going ahead of them), bikers like yourself in big groups, camper vans and sports cars.

Defo a clash between those who wanted to make progress (some locals were far more agitated than me) and those who pootle around in a vehicle they clearly can't drive properly. There is a simple solution, campers / caravanists limited to driving in the dark hours. A sort of apartheid for the roads. (No, am not being totally serious)

In the village we refer to a certain driver type locally as a classic "forties" driver and not because of age - they are the ones who on a 60pmh country lane do 40mph, but through villages with a 30mph or even in some cases 20mph limits, still maintain their 40mph speed.

Campsites are businesses too you know and most have shops that sell everyday items that get bought by people who use them. I know people stop over in pub car parks which means eating and drinking in them, helping to make them financially viable as a business too. I’m sure it’s a pain having to drive a bit slower than you’d like, but that is the very definition of a first world problem. Also most modern vans drive like cars, so it’s generally the older vans and caravans that are holding up traffic, but that’s the trade off of attracting visitors and the roads aren’t really designed for racing are they?
