Best country I've ever visited by some margin. Even better than Japan imo, which I previously thought would never be beaten at the top of my list.

Starmer really has put his Heart and Soul into this visit.

Before the trip, Starmer told foreign secretary Yvette Cooper that if she didn't put in the groundwork to allow him to achieve this breakthrough on the visit he would deck 'er.

I'm here all week.

I definitely had a bit of a Carol Decker crush in the mid 80s. Obviously not to the Kim Wilde or Susanna Hoffs level, but it was undeniable.

I believe that in the poll I set up, China was seen as the lowest threat to the UK at the moment (well below that of immigrants). There is much to dislike about their regime and how it treats many of its own people but they are keen to develop strong trading relations and don't appear to want to influence this country's politics. In my view that makes them far less dangerous than the US (which also has a regime treating many of its own people appallingly right now).

Though China seem to have very good PR, it’s a very one way trading relationship. We have much closer ties with the US economy which EU aside is our largest export market. China is very much a protective market, western FDI has been declining for this reason (a 30 year low in 2025). UK business sentiment and that of the City on China is very much more bearish than the UK gov, there’s little enthusiasm for investment into their market because of a dubious legal system, complete non-complaince with IP protection, data protection risk etc. They’ve also been active in cyber atttacks.

Whilst they’ve relaxed the rules about foreign ownership of firms in China, there is still vigorous government oversight. Some of our biggest firms like HSBC have dramatically reduced their presence there. Given the trade and power imbalance this will be a deal that very much favours China.

Out of the frying pan…

Any deal that is struck will have at its heart benefits for both parties or one or other won't agree to it.

China is not an export market generally because their labour costs (and awful working conditions) make most products far cheaper there. We can only sell on quality or exclusivity to those who can afford it.

I would say the US is a bigger threat for the very reason that we already rely on them for more export than we do China! They are also extremely protectionist and always have been. Under Trump they are more so but with the added risk of volatility, unpredictability and political threats.

I agree China are not great. I just feel the US are worse right now.

That view does fly in the face of actual business sentiment though, there’s far more investment plans in the US than China for the reasons I gave. Without reopening the previous debate - Starmer can trumpet this as a great deal but with the autocratic Chinese regime it’s never going to be as important as important a market. Firms aren’t enthusiastic about operating under the Chinese legal system, or with the risk of theft of their IP.

It’s pretty desperate stuff in fact heading over to an authoritarian regime that disappears, imprisons, and puts in camps its Muslim minority. Starmer should be working on getting us back in the Single Market with it’s wealthy economies, stable legal systems and data, IP, and employment protections. He has a huge majority and nothing to lose by doing so.

It's a good job we don't play ice hockey, as doing a deal with China makes that illegal apparently...
