Stupid VAR is going to destroy football. 09:13 - Mar 1 with 1037 viewsericclacton

Burnley Brentford game was a VAR circus, supporters will run out of patience.

Idiots are running the game now, one inch offside was the VAR conclusion. They will dismantle what the game is about.

Awful wasn't it?

3 minutes for the offside decision (even with semi automated offsides) and 5 minutes for the 'handball'. Clearly clear and obvious mistakes.

The thing that infuriates me is that you 'have to give handball if Barnes scores, but if Barnes had passed it and someone else had scored the goal would have stood' Since when did we have optional offences? If you're going to give handball on the initial contact, if he passes it's still handball.

If we are going to do that, then we have to stop this whole natural v unnatural position stuff and just blow for the offence at the merest contact

I feel you will struggle to find many football fans who feel the game has improved for the introduction of VAR.

The obvious response of this is of course to introduce more interventions.

I read that, during the world cup, it's also going to be used for corners and yellow cards.

The game will soon be so unrecognisable and there wont be any free flowing game time.

I remember Wolves proposed scrapping VAR in the Premier League but I believe all other clubs, including Ipswich, voted against. I think we should ask ITFC to confirm how we would vote if a new proposal to get rid of VAR was put forward. Can we table such a motion ourselves, if promoted? Why should fans have to put up with VAR when we don't want it, given how much we pay for tickets and TV subscriptions?

Why would ITFC tell us what their voting intention would be?

Even if such a vote were to take place, it would need the agreement of, (IIRC), 16 of the 20 clubs.
Never going to happen.

I still can't see any conclusive evidence it hits his arm. Might brush it, might not. Should have stayed with the on field decision.

It's all operated by idiots. IFAB, FIFA, UEFA, FA, PGMOL, Premier League, all of them are self serving idiots trying to throw their weight around, justify themselves and make more money for themselves.

Managers disgruntled about decisions, anal levels of slow motion analysis from TV pundits and, yes, even a number of fans collectively moaning about "poor" or inconsistent refereeing must all hold their hands up here I think.

The apparent object of VAR was to make sure the "right" decision was made and to bring refereeing consistancy across ALL games.

We all have differing views on the extent to which match officials are "good" or "poor" but for me the over-riding requirement was that they were consistent with the 90 minutes of the particular game they were refereeing. Given that a number of the laws of the game certainly used to be framed within the confines of "if, in the opinion of the referee", for me the way to move towards cross-game consistency was to improve refereeing standards - through training and a more positive approach from the assessors' panel rather than simple "demotion" as a learning tool.

As far as I am concerned, before one even begins to discuss the capability of the technology being used and the fact that reviews are undertaken by the very same group of people who will later referee matches themselves, VAR was introduced for the wrong reasons and with the wrong aims.

The road to hell truly is paved with good intentions.

I think Mark Ashton hinted in a recent interview the club might vote differently next time. If fans are unhappy with VAR I think questions should be asked and pressure should be put on the clubs and ruling authorities. I want to go to football to enjoy the moment, not be waiting around for VAR decisions.

And, last week the Spurs vs Arsenal was delayed for a total of (about) 15 minutes because the referee/linesman electronic communication didn't work.
Football has been going for over 150 years without this cr*p and the linesman
has a flag to alert the referee to anything.
Ruined the game for the spectator.

Many years ago when i did a prelim FA coaching badge( yes it was a long time ago!) .. ww had to do element of understanding the Laws and a refere was brought in to inform and educate us. He gave us a very simple definition of handball which i think was unambiguous and easy to apply ... if the ball hits the hand/ arm (to shoulder) and that player or his team gained an advantage from it.. Thats Handball! No intentional or unintentional ( rather like the foot rule in hockey) .
Currently i really couldnt tell you what the current law is but i bet thers many clauses and sub clauses!
To think this beautiful game was built on 13 basic laws!

1 inch or 1ft it’s still offside and you need the correct decision otherwise what’s the point in any of it.

You need VAR when millions are at stake with regards to relegation or promotion.

Originally offside was a law to prevent goalhanging and i believe incled the phrase seeeking to gain an advantage..... it is now the basis of a defensive tactic. Before VAR i think most accepted benefit of doubt to the attacker... imo VAR shouldn't get involved in any overlap of bodies, IF of course we HAVE to have it.

It has slowed the PL games down to a stand still, that is of no interest to the paying public.

Indeed. I would favour scrapping offside altogether. But, if we have it as a rule, accept the assistant's call unless it is clearly wrong on a single look - none of this taking 5 minute to draw lines and work it out.

Today's VAR call is to award a red card to a Palace player after a foul outside the box leads to Cunha throwing himself over inside the box. Still a penalty and a red card as well. IF they deemed the foul correct, award the free kick and the red card. Instead Man Utd get a better goal-scoring opportunity than Cunha would have had AND the red card as well.

It's already destroyed football. Much happier with the odd mistake being made by officials rather than constant delays and VAR. It takes the fun out of the game
