One counterprotester at the event lit and threw a device containing nuts, bolts and screws at the anti-Muslim protesters after someone from that group used pepper spray on the counterprotest, police said"

You are, by some distance, the very worst poster on this site. You're a repeated and continuing contrarian and apologist for all things dreadful in the world right now, and you *absolutely* revel in it.

what a strange response. i think what happened was that the op misread the headline of the guardian article - he clearly read "Explosive device thrown at Mamdami's house". whereas the actual headline was "Explosive device thrown outside of Zohran Mamdani’s residence at anti-Islam protest" "outside" is not the same as "at". having found something that appeared to confirm his pre-existing assumptions the op didn't bother to read the article to find out what really happened. what really happened was pretty much the opposite of what he was seeking to imply. the device was thrown by counter-protestors. i am sorry if someone reading stuff and referring to what it actually says, rather than what someone wishes it said, upsets you so greatly. if you think referring to what has actually been written is 'contrarian' and 'apologist' then that says more about you than about me.

Sorry but Starmer was right. As is Labour MP David Taylor. Here is Mothin Ali alongside the regime flag And they are trashing the pre revolution flag. And whilst it is appalling that Ali is receiving death threats, perhaps he will reflect on the campaign of hate he led against Rabbi Zecharia Deutsch, a Leeds University chaplain who served as a reservist in the IDF, which resulted in him and his family being forced into hiding, moving to a secret location on police advice in February 2024. I think my point is valid. The device thrown by the counter protesters was awful and they are rightly being dealt with. However, without the rhetoric from Trump and his fellow republicans about Mamdani before the election there wouldn't be these protests outside his house. They have whipped up so much anger with lies and nonsense that the protestors come more than once screaming vitrol and rubbish and that draws counter protesters, both good and bad. So I do feel it was inevitable and I think my pointing if the finger is justified. SB

Hey Funge. Wasn’t lowers merely correcting the op and pointing out that the explosive device was thrown by the counter protesters and not the racist islamophobic scum protesting outside the Mayor’s home?

not thrown "at" his house though? and a new york mayor's "residence" is no more a "house" than the "white house". throwing something "at" his "house" definitely gives the impression that the device was intended as an attack against him. it doesn't give the impression that the device was an attempt to murder people protesting against him, whilst demonstrating in a public space outside of a public building.

That tells me they see the Greens as a real threat. It’s long been open season on Muslims and getting worse, unfortunately. Some of the evidence put forward to the Islamophobia Inquiry by the Muslim Council of Britain makes for depressing reading. This statistic from 2018 stands out for me as an illustration of how ‘we’ view Muslims of lesser people undeserving of recognition /respect (it would be interesting see what the figure is now): “47% would not be willing to accept Muslims as members of their family (the worst figure in Western Europe after Italy (57%)”(this was based on a survey conducted by the Pew Centre in 2018). https://mcb.org.uk/wp-content/ On the positive side, at least we have had ongoing Inquiries and we do still have a broadly free society where people are able to research and report on such things. Academics can still obtain grants to study discrimination and NGOs, community groups and charities are still able to operate and access funding. All such anti-discrimination work (for all currently protected characteristics) would be under threat should Reform win a GE.

Yes, the title is misleading and a lesson to all not to post in a hurry on transport. I'll amend accordingly. My general point still stands and you've ignored it entirely in favour of concentrating on semantics. SB

Whether Ali is a wrong'un wasn't the point I was making. My point was that Starmer, as PM, shouldn't be using knock-about political language which amplifies and inflames things if the consequences are that the subject of his words receives death threats. [Post edited 9 Mar 10:38]
