Just a "banter" account with a quarter of a million followers casually posting about Delap and Slicker with no other reason than to bring about a stream of homophobia.

This is why anti-homophobia campaigns still matter.

And it’s a recycled post, it’s from last year - was posted in September. Also gained traction on Twitter then for all the wrong reasons.

I mean, they're not in the top five of 'worst things about social media' but '[insert sport name here]banter' accounts are still up there with the worst of them.

I know its obvious but clicks & engagement is how they monetise their account. The best thing people can do is unfollow and scroll past them.

Maybe there’s something in it? Delap did once describe Slicker as a keeper.

Makes you think dunnit?

Sorry if that’s in bad taste but I can’t help how my brain doesn’t work. Obviously any homophobia is disgusting and monetising it even more so. No wonder players don’t feel safe to come out.

The post is bait for homophobes. In itself, it's a picture of 2 friends. Nothing really weird at all if you're a normal person.

However there is a significant number of people on social media who are perplexed by healthy male relationships and will assume from this innocuous photo that they are in a gay relationship. The account rehashing this old post knows this and is using this to farm engagement from the sh1ttier elements of society who forgot that it was posted to Facebook 6 months ago and can froth at the mouth again.

It's twitter. You can openly call people pretty much any derogatory term without issue on there now. No chance this tweet receives any action.

Depressing replies to the original tweet.

Maybe we can have him back next season if we go up and Chelsea don't want him.

The fact that a footballer in the top few divisions hasn't been able to publicly come out as gay is one of the biggest stains on modern football.

It is very sad that the culture and atmosphere of a fundamentally grassroots and working class sport doesn't allow for all its participants to be themselves.
