It wouldn't shock me at all if he invites Russia. Probably completely out of the blue without asking anyone during one of their phone calls.

But him not wanting Iran to play in the World Cup raises an entirely different conversation. I'm of the view that a national team represents its people and not its government. Some of the players in the Iranian squad will be very much against the barbaric regime in Tehran. The ordinary people of Iran deserve to see their team compete in the world cup imo.

But it’s a sorry state of affairs that four FIFA world cups in a row will go to countries who are not fit to host events of this stature. I’ve always been so excited about a WC. Not so much this time. Partly the USA factor, partly the ridiculous 48 team format. Also to note, nobody on this board has a fecking clue how the Iranian public view any of this despite grandstanding posts to the contrary.

Yawn. Please find yourself a new hobby. Fed up with you following me around this board with constant digs. Just put me on ignore if you don't like my contributions. FYI though: "Football is immensely popular in Iran, serving as a significant source of hope and national pride, with the national team, Team Melli, often uniting the public despite internal and external challenges. Football is ingrained in daily life, played nationwide, and acts as a powerful cultural force, providing a rare reprieve for many Iranians". [Post edited 12 Mar 20:14]

There seems to be a fair amount of AI drafted posts on here these days. I'm not making any specific accusations - just a vibe. Inevitable I suppose.

Your observation regarding the potential presence of AI-generated posts on this football forum is logically understandable and contextually reasonable. As artificial intelligence language generation systems become increasingly available to the general public internet user population, it is statistically predictable that some percentage of forum contributions may be produced or assisted by such technological tools. Therefore, the overall “vibe” you are describing could plausibly be interpreted as an emergent side effect of wider AI adoption across digital communication platforms, including environments dedicated to football discussion.

Will the Guardian do? https://www.theguardian.com/fo "But like many dictators he understood and was wary of the power of the country’s most popular sport, and the passions it provoked, especially when thousands of people came together". "Throughout the Ayatollah’s time, players – heroes to millions – had to be careful what they said. Vital games have taken place amid protests at home, such as the 2010 World Cup qualifier in Seoul when several players donned green armbands, the colour of the opposition candidate in a presidential election many thought was rigged " "During the 2022 World Cup, there were more protests at home and players refused to sing the national anthem. There was something similar with the under-23 team this year when the regime was killing protesters, and this week the women’s team stayed silent during the anthem before their game against South Korea." Just today we heard that this hero who spoke out against the regime has gone missing. So yeah. I stand by my comment that "a national team represents its people and not its government. Some of the players in the Iranian squad will be very much against the barbaric regime in Tehran" [source GlasgowBlue, TWTD poster]. Football has always been a chance for ordinary people to forget about the crap that is going on around the world for 90 minutes. Maybe you think differently? Perhaps when England got to the final of Euro 2020 in 2021 you thought they were representing Boris Johnson and the Tory government, rather than the millions of people in England who had just come out of a traumatic year after the Covid pandemic? The supporters of Iran have protested against their previous ruler in various ways during World Cup games since 1998 and did so quite vividly in Qatar against England in our opening game (I was at that one). It is of course possible that those protestors don’t represent the will and wishes of the majority within the country (and indeed are probably from a certain position of privilege to go to World Cup games in France, Qatar and every where in between) but I do agree that it is very sad that a people don’t get to see their team perform on the world stage, regardless of their views on the rights or wrongs of the current war and the outcomes of it.

How strange. Maybe the board needs an agreed ethical approach to using AI for posts? There's a chance it'll turn into competitive AI mush.
| How long until Trump offers Russia a wildcard spot at the world cup? on 07:20 - Mar 13 with 694 views | DJR | Whilst it looks like the Iranian government doesn't want to take part anyway, I thought this from Trump yesterday was pretty shocking, and certainly isn't going to persuade Iran to take part. Earlier, Donald Trump said the Iranian national football team was “welcome” to participate at this summer’s World Cup - which is taking place in the US, Canada and Mexico - but, extraordinarily, added: "I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety." That really doesn't befit a UEFA man of peace [Post edited 13 Mar 7:21]

If it was a normal world cup hosted by a country the president of which is not a total megalomaniac, I'd agree with you. I think there's an argument that the Orange Manbaby has an incredible amount of sway over FIFA and Infantino (q.v. The Fifa Peace Prize), so there's probably a greater than nil chance that he could use his position to encourage FIFA to allow Russia to take a slot vacated by Iran (or any other conscientious objectors, for that matter).

The world needs an ethical approach to using AI not just the board! My own I’ll-informed opinion fwiw is that all AI generators available for public use should be required by law to embed some sort of integrated signature that identifies them as AI. For now we can reasonably spot AI with a bit of care, but as AI gets better that’ll become harder. We’re heading for a a whole heap of 💩 where the public discourse gets warped by AI. And then you’ve got all the issues around schools and universities, etc.
