Matusiwa and cards 11:37 - Mar 15 with 1607 viewsChurchman

The run he’s been on without picking up that 10th yellow has been remarkable. 17 games. Has he been a better player for exercising more discipline with his challenges? I don’t think it has cost us so in my book, yes.

He is a terrific player. Probably player of the season for me ahead of Clarke and O’Shea.

He should treat himself to a yellow against Millwall. He's earnt it.

Truly impaired.

Think of all the money he’s saved as well at £10 a yellow.

Didn't Morsy do similar in, I think it was the Championship promotion season?

And that seemed a miracle at the time. I didn't realise Matusiwa had gone just over twice the number!

Probably took him a few games to understand Championship refs are cr@p compared to French refs. Once he worked out perfectly well timed sliding in tackles equal a yellow in the championship, he changed his approach.

I actually thought Morsy played better when he was on a card knife edge, but that might be wishful thinking.

I think you are right about adjustment and cr@p refs here compared to what he’s used to.

Anyhow, top player.

What really strikes me is their ability to avoid them (both Matusiwa and Morsy). Which makes you wonder why they don't reign it in just a bit to not end up walking that tightrope. The number they get (Morsy at any rate) for dissent was especially notable. Do they think it makes a big difference to the referee?

I thought he went 4 games after his 9th yellow, then got his 10th on NYD away to Stoke, and missed the Leicester and Sunderland games.

My POS too as things stand, and I think I'd be pretty much with you with those next in line as well. I'd also give a shout out to Furlong, who has proved to be an absolute bargain this season, and is extremely consistent.

I think he’s a good player. Given how McKenna sets his team up that’s the most vulnerable position in it. For me, better than Harry C, Donacien and Tuanzebe in the role not least because his positional awareness is so good. Big bloke, likes to razz the opposition, decent in the air the only thing that irritates me is that final ball could be better at times.

Stays fit too. I think people underestimate that aspect sometimes.

Even more impressive is O'Shea going 37 games without one at all.

I always felt we were a lesser team when Morsy had to rein things in but thats not backed by data. I look at a couple of times, particularly that Dec-Jan drop off for points. Matusiwa, ive not noticed that same drop off, sure weve left points on the table recently and it may be in part down to less bite in midfield but he picked cards up early in the season when the whole team wasnt at it and most of our draws or losses have been direct defensive madness or not taking scoring chances. Either-way he’s on target for POTY.
