While the evil regimes in Washington and Jerusalem work to destroy the world... 08:44 - Mar 23 with 907 viewsNthQldITFC

...spare a thought for 'big brother' ignored by governments and by vast chunks of the wilfully ignorant, materialism-obsessed populace. Climate Change.

Old CC is busy there doing its thing, happy that we're all obsessed with more oil again, but slightly perturbed that despite registering a Top Three year - "My numbers are great, just look at my numbers, no-one's ever seen numbers like these numbers. Mmm.. Numbers" - a Top Three year for warming against all the odds in a La Nina year, the jolly old human race is still not looking at it with anything like the respect it deserves.

It's quick - by the gods, it's quick - but is it going to be quick enough to kill us before the fascists trigger a nuclear winter? CC is probably hoping for a major positive feedback tipping point to be reached to swing momentum back in its favour to allow it to beat the silly little humans to the Armageddon draw - but does CC realise that the same ignorant, materialistic, 'money' and 'religion' driven insanities of the stupid little beasts feed both it and its competition?

Those of us who have worked with the plant life of our country for the past nigh on 50 years concur wholeheartedly with this. One small example, hawthorn hedges are beginning to come into flower in my little piece of Suffolk. There common name is May for a reason. Our indigenous flora is going to become the exception rather than the rule in years to come. Mature native trees are struggling and several species will soon be under threat from extreme drought and lack of proper seasons. I’m seeing this more often than not now. It bothers me somewhat. Mother Nature is an amazing thing, is adaptable but we should be doing far more to protect our environment.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

"A calculation that the US-Israeli war on Iran is spewing greenhouse gases faster than 84 countries combined underestimates the true impact of the war on the climate, according to one of the world’s most senior climate scientists.

On Saturday, the Guardian revealed the findings of an analysis of the carbon impact of the war, which found it had led to 5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in just its first 14 days, making it a disaster not just for the people of the region, but also for the climate."

I garden for pleasure rather than a job, but even so the trends are impossible to ignore. I've had the lawnmower out in February the last few years ffs.

My plum, apple, cherry and green gage trees are all now coming into blossom too.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Indeed. Mowing in February would have been unthinkable in the not too distant past. The fruit trees are all over the place as are native hedgerows and trees. I was even tempted (slightly) to water our containers this evening, then had to give my head a wobble. Rodent activity around the cottage has been prevalent, much more than in the past. House sparrows have been nesting under the porch tiles for two or three weeks now. Benters was spot on earlier in the thread, his old saying doesn’t apply anymore.

I got told I have no critical thinking skills for studying this stuff and upsetting the hard of thinking in the field of economics. The latest crankery from economists is the idea of abundance, a burn, baby, burn scenario, despite scientists from multiple fields saying we are in climate and ecological overshoot.

Link here that looks at the state of climate for 2025.

Yep. It’s ecocide. A lot of people will dismiss it as insignificant compared to the reported deaths, not realising climate change does and will continue to lead to a far greater number of deaths each year (along with the non-fatal health implications, economic damage, impact on natural ecosystems, food and water security, etc.).

It raises a fascinating (if that's an appropriate word) psychological question about why there are so many people who don't seem to consciously understand the overwhelming threat of climate change, but seem to crap themselves about wars and pandemics etc.

What are the basic components of the threat-fear equation and why do so many people not have a rational attitude* to CC based on weighing up the whole? (* what I would subjectively consider a rational attitude anyway!)

Time:
War is now, pandemic could be any moment, CC is slow and might be hundreds of years away.
- but CC has well-understood (if not precisely predictable yet?) tipping points, potentially any moment now.

Distance:
Iran 'might' have missiles which can reach London, pandemic start anywhere and be here in days, CC happens in the polar regions and around the equator.
- even without cascading events doing much to temperate regions, the interconnectedness of food and other vital commodities makes the whole world our life support system.

Imagery:
War is big explosions and blood and bits of bodies everywhere, pandemic is suffocating to death in a hospital bed, CC is getting a bit too hot if you're away from the air-con.
- quite apart from starvation and heat death and if you're only looking at humans, CC is or will be triggering war and pandemics too!

It chucked it down with rain here in Tenerife for a few days recently, but they still have a severe lack of water here, so some wine growers have abandoned their vineyards as uneconomic.

Dunno. Has it got something to do with immediacy and novelty? A death from war is immediate and violent or the injuries are horrific and very visible. CC deaths are more often manifest through an acceleration of normal ways of dying, so are hidden away, such as the elderly most vulnerable to heat waves dying prematurely (I’m surprised how little anger there was over tens of thousands of excess deaths in care homes during COVID; that’s a similar situation that doesn’t affect people unless they were involved).

Some of the deaths are also in very poor regions that suffer from things like floods and landslides anyway. CC just accelerates the types of deaths that people have become used to hearing about. The numbers go up, yet people aren’t paying much attention to them whereas a terrorist attack or a war we’re involved in is different and more likely to make the news.
