BBC: Farage invited to Ipswich Town, says club associate 15:30 - Mar 27 with 6674 viewsSitfcB

It was James Pearce via LinkedIn.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

‘The BBC has approached the Blues with a series of questions about the visit, including about who arranged it and whether the club knew Farage would be using its branding to promote the party.

It has declined to comment.’

Of course, whether there was an invite in the first place is just detail. We know MA met with NF during the visit and the club told a different story.

It is detail, but it is also speaks to intention.

So he admits he reached out to Reform to request that they meet with Ashton, but also claims that Ashton was unaware of the request at the time?

Chinny f***ing reckon.

... sacrificial red card; taking one for the team tactic

My understanding is that that's not quite correct. The contact from James Pearce wasn't an invite to the club as implied, but regarding Ashton and Farage meeting up privately elsewhere. How it then turned into the circus it did, I'm not quite sure, although am guessing that may have been the catalyst for Reform feeling they were welcome and making contact.

They appear to have changed that aspect of the story.

How do you feel about being lied to Phil? I'm not saying it has in my mind, but you've dedicated years to TWTD being a trusted resource for ITFC news, as has EADT, and you could argue that's been compromised by what you were initially told and subsequently (and understandably with the lies you were fed at the time) doubled down on in RKD's thread.

Obviously not happy and there will be bridge building towards us as well as the fanbase, players, sponsors etc. What irked me re RKD's thread was it was suggesting I was defending the visit when I'd not given an opinion, just put out the story based on the steer which I'd been given.

That's fair enough. I think that was obvious tbh, you were simply reporting what you were told. That's not on you, but those telling you it.

I hope the club recognises the mistakes and apologises, really not a good look and not fair on you at all IMO.

Cheers. Yes, I think they're aware that they have damaged relationships with the likes of me and have to address that situation.

I assume there is no question of Ashton leaving then? Just a lot of bridge building and apologising etc.

True. How things moved from James Pearce's suggestion of a meeting elsewhere to Reform being at the club, going to town social media-wise and meeting MA remains unclear.

Must admit I read it the other way: "I think they are in the process of putting something together to move things on and start to build bridges."

I can only think of one thing which would do actually do that

Edit: Just seen Phil's reply. Oof

Apologising is the least that needs to happen but, while we'll have to wait and see what that looks/sounds like, if you're in a situation where the CEO (and chairman) is apologising to the staff, players, fans and media for lying to them and bringing the club into disrepute in the process, you've surely got to realise that having to do it at all makes that position untenable.

The absolute minimum change that should occur is a new chairman being appointed to keep the other people in senior positions in check.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Needs to get a move on with the apology then, ought to have been sorted before Womens game tomorrow but that doesnt look likely. Is he still working out which version of events to put forward!?

Maybe he's working out how many of the lies he can stick by and how many will be contradicted by The Athletic as soon as he posts it

So my take is that he's now considered bigger than the club?

Given some of the things we've moved players on for over the years, this is beginning to look as though there are some serious double standards at work.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

"at that point Ashton was not aware the approach had been made" - I don't see that's a very material fact. Even if Pearce's job is to make initial contact, there's a lot that must happen between that and Monday's publicity jamboree, complete with private meeting with Ashton + COO (and presumably without Pearce), merch we've funded with our revenue, etc. Pearce doesn't arrange all that. When did Ashton get involved? He didn't just rock-up to the boardroom and find, to his shock, the next Prime Minister (perhaps) happened to be sitting there. Ashton at least participated in arrangements, if not made them himself.

I find it suspect that an article shifting the blame from Ashton to Pearce appeared in the BBC. Pearce had a "previous role as BBC Sports News Correspondent" - https://x.com/Pearcesport.
"Can you help me take a bullet for my boss please my old muckers?"

This article changes nothing. Ashton out.

I hope that they're smart enough to realise that a powder-puff interview consisting of Matt Holland/Jacob Henderson asking Ashton his own pre-prepared questions is probably the worst thing that they could possibly do right now.

It might have worked on Tuesday, but Ashton has fecked up so badly now that a Trumpian propaganda piece is only going to make things worse.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.
