Just seen a Ladbrokes poster advertising odds for the 1978 FA Cup semi finals. WBA were11/10 to beat us on the day, Town were 5/2, with 2/1 the draw. While WBA were a decent side who finished 6th in the league, I felt confident we could beat them as long as we could get something close to our best XI on the pitch. The bookies similarly strongly favoured Arsenal for the final at even money, with Town at 9/4.
We were underdogs for both games, having had a poor, stuttering season. West Brom had a really good side, but I thought at the time we had a good chance if we had enough of our better players fit.
Mariner never gets a mention, but he was immense that day, as he was for the Final. Well and truly in his prime.
I actually feared WBA more than Arsenal. The former were a better team. Arsenal were very reliant on Brady and while they had one of the greatest keepers I’ve ever seen and a settled defence, I thought they could be got at.
Both days are two of the most memorable for me, for obvious reasons. My recollections of the Highbury game are a lot stronger. Wembley was a bit of a blur. The semi final was so tense after the second was scored. We defended for what seemed a lifetime.
The Wark clincher is the most memorable moment I’ve had in all my time watching them. The scenes were beyond scenes.
Didn't Turner make a mess of a great chance to put the game to bed in the second half?
I was also at Highbury for the semi, a day I remember very well. Brian Talbot’s bravery set him call off. Recall some of the Baggis fans were a tad nasty after the game: but a great performance and great day.

Also, in the quarter finals, West Brom had beaten Forest, who went on to win the league.

Agree with all of that. WBA were a really decent side, Cyrille Regis up front, Laurie Cunningham, Tony Brown, a strong defence. We played them in the league a few weeks previously and were lucky to escape with a 2-2 draw.
I also remember the semi-final much more than the final. Along with St Etienne and the Amsterdam final probably my favourite ever away day.
