Sorry to be a happy clapper... 14:58 - Apr 15 with 2094 viewsJ2BLUE

but we are still in a great position. Last night was hugely disappointing obviously but we're still in a good place.

Millwall, Boro, Ipswich and Southampton have taken ONE point between them at Fratton Park this season.

8 points will be enough if we do not lose to Boro and neither Millwall/Saints take maximum points from their remaining games. Southampton are capable of it but they have four tough fixtures left if you look deeper than the league table. Swansea and Preston are very good at home. Bristol City are unbeaten under Hodgson and only conceded once in three games. 8 points is enough, even if Southampton beat us convincingly.

Similarly if we don't get the job done from here, we don't deserve automatic promotion. It's firmly in our hands still despite last night.

Not the same thing exactly but didn't Burnley keep something like 17 clean sheets in a row?

tbh I don't see Saints dropping any points aside from us (perhaps) they have easy games and mostly at home.

They've got two at home, one of which is against us, and two away. It's not impossible they start to hit a wall, they've played a lot of football since Christmas and the kind of run they've been on is hard to sustain. In 2023/24 both Saints and Leeds faltered after putting in a monster effort to catch us up.

Whoever goes up second is not a usual automatic team at this point. Well under 2PPG

Town have already lost 7 away
M’boro relegation form into the run in
Southampton awful first half of the season
Millwall are well doing well but Millwall

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

Swansea feels like the biggest chance, less rest and traveling, might he too good for them if it’s super open though, which tends to be the case in Swansea games.

They’re doing Bristol at home!

You are correct on split of games, I'd forgotten they only have 4 left now but they made easy work of Blackburn who you could argue are fighting as much as Pompey.

Trouble is with 4 to play I don't see them faltering the old adage you don't feel tired when you win every week is very true like us in L1 run.

If we are to go up we are doing it the hard way that means beating Boro and not losing against Saints. Hoping Saints take City to extra time and lose 29-30 on pens.

You are absolutely right. At the moment Millwall, Middlesbrough & Southampton have to win all their games and hope for slip ups. We're lucky to have it in our own hands, which makes it even more frustrating that we played like that last night.

But yes, it is a great position. Let's not blow it.

Yep. This is the big issue for me. Pompey are still stretched and down to the bare bones, yet still managed to summon more grit and determination. That they outworked us so easily is a major red flag for me. Are we more jaded than McKenna is letting on? Are several players running on fumes?

If they are there's something very wrong with them. I have verifiable stats/facts that show that many have played no more than 20 something full 90 minute games this season, and some less, and that's including minutes spent on the field of play in cups, internationals and for other clubs. It's a simple equation, minutes played in total divided by 90. For interest, way out in front of anyone else is Dara O'shea, with more than 40 full 90 minute games behind him. There are only around 4 outfield players to have hit the 30 full 90 minute metric. So jaded? Tired? I most certainly hope not!

Yeah exactly. The idea they can’t beat Swansea and Bristol before they play us because of law of averages is a bit ridiculous at this point, won 15 and draw 3 in 18!

We need to win Sunday.

I've been fairly optimistic all season but after Tuesday I think nervous clapper would now better describe me.
